Rubbing Elbows

Not long ago, I was talking with someone (who was it??) about how I'd met Wonder Woman or, more accurately, Lynda Carter sans costume but before she climbed out of the bottle and became the spokeswoman for irritable bowel syndrome.

Now I'm curious - what celebrities have you run into?

Ok so she barely counts as a celebrity, but Kathy from Fisher. I got fairly close to Tori Amos and got her signiture but I didn't officially meet her. I also briefly met Peter Paige from Queer as Folk at Pride Day.

Balki.

She SO counts! I think you mentioned that you met Lynda Carter in my comments. Although, I don't think that irritable bowel syndrome was mentioned.

I've met David Hasseloff, Sebastion Bach (Skid Row), a whole slew of not so mainstream bands... I know there are more but David Hasseloff definately overshadows everyone.

I met Aidan Gillen from the original, British Queer as Folk at the airport once, with his girlfriend & baby.

& I met the entire Boyzone set [collect all 5!], but they were dickasses.

Heheh. I worked with David Hasselhoff's sister. Um, celebrities that I've met? Natalie Merchant is the only one I can think of off hand.

I met Wesley Clark yesterday. Have met Garth Brooks and Vince Gill, that's about it, I think.

martin sheen, carrol o'connor, leann rimes all in person.

i've seen (but not approached): dick van dyke, pierce brosnin, whoopi goldberg, jeremy piven, jerry van dyke, tony danza and i'm sure a couple others that escape my mind right now. hey, it helps to have a grandmother that lives in malibu.

Matthew Good (rather famous canadian singer) was at the table beside mine at the White Spot in the Vancouver Airport this summer, I didn't approached him though, just gawked from my table lol

I'm sure I passed Naomi Campbell walking along the street in Nice.

Posted by: Amber at February 11, 2004 12:28 PM

Let's see: I met Whitney Houston and Casey Kasem at some charity event a looong time ago in LA. Not very exciting!

I know he was never a celebrity in the US, but I interviewed Brett Anderson, the lead singer of the English band Suede, a few times.

That's about it.

I met (the late) Shirley Hemphill (from What's Happenin' fame) at a comedy show; Paul Newman, Phil Donahue and Marlo Thomas, Ashford & Simpson (they all live in my town, so I've seen them around at times); Jose Feliciano; that guy Eric from the very first "Real World NY" (not sure he counts as a celebrity, but we passed by on the street in NYC); Amy Brenneman (Judging Amy).

Posted by: Missy at February 11, 2004 1:04 PM

Run into or actually went to meet?

I don't know if there is any celebrity I've run into. But I've met Steven Tyler twice. And, damn, I know I've had other celebrtiy encounters, but can't really remember! Grrrrrrrrrr! My brains must be fried tonight.

Ray Layota came to my Starbucks. He aparently grew up in a closeby town.

That's all I can think of.....

I grew up at Science Fiction Conventions, so the geek-quota of celebrities is high for me. I had a habit when I was a child of literally running into celebrities there. The first one was Richard Hatch (Apollo from Battlestar Gallactia, not the guy on Survivor). After that, George Takei, Michael Dorn, James Marsters, Peter Woodward and John DeLancie. Those are the ones that I've actually talked to, but there are a bunch of others that I just saw and pointed at. :)

I stood behind Walter Matthau in line at a hotel gift shop in Princeton. He looked really, really old.

Posted by: amalah at February 11, 2004 2:14 PM

I used to work in the Hamptons in the summer waitressing (in college). I waited on and ran into quite a few people. Rick Moranis, Jimmy Buffet & his wife, Uma Thurman, Kathleen Turner (she likes tequila shots), Billy Joel, Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger with President Clinton (from afar... ok well across the street), John Stewart, and Martha Stewart (pre-lawsuit)....

Wow I never listed out like that. Weird. But cool.

Posted by: sphinx at February 11, 2004 2:15 PM

Way too many to list - mostly musicians. I used to go to a lot of clubs frequented by musicians when I lived in London.

One you might be most interested is I went to school with Kerri Kasem (scantily clad model and daughter of Kasey Kasem). I ran into her again at a reunion recently. She hasn't changed at all.

Most of mine are comic book "celebrities" so I don't know that it counts. Most people don't know who they are. Except maybe, hmmm, Neil Gaiman. Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, Dave Sim, Dan Piraro, Bill Willingham, Wendy & Richard Pini, Mel White, oh...Todd McFarlane, etc., etc. I met them when I self-published comics.

I don't recall having met any actors or musicians.

I had a tug of war with Michael Keaton at a book rack.

Posted by: Lee at February 11, 2004 2:48 PM

i see myself in the mirror every morning--
could it get any better than that?
oh, wait, you mean someone
OTHER PEOPLE admire...
:)

Posted by: stacy at February 11, 2004 3:57 PM

Lou Barlow (Sebadoh, Folk Implosion, etc), Adam Duritz (he's a jerk), handful of others that I can't recall right now

I dated a special effects guy a few years ago and we sent his portfolio to David Letterman, and he got on the show TWICE. He was also Dr. Joyce Brothers' PR man for a few years.... Does that count? Also, I was in an elevator with Tony Bennett and his piano player in Las Vegas. I was on my way to his show at the old Vegas World hotel. I didn't know it was him [I was very young... just 21 years old!]. He stared and smirked at me the whole ride down, and I thought he looked scary. LOL When I saw him get on stage, I could have kicked myself!!! LOL

Being a government plebe... I used to work on K Street, and in my building was a dentist who did work on Teddy Kennedy and Clarence Thomas and a bunch of Wizards players. I was introduced to Teddy and rode in the elevator with Clarence.

I've talked to Jeff Goldblum, bumped into Meg Ryan, saw Pamela Anderson Lee at a Target. I also had to drag a coworker away from Busta Rhymes one time. She kept shouting, "Busta! Hey Busta!!"

Posted by: katherine at February 12, 2004 10:23 AM

let's see...i was with jdiddy when she met mr hasselhoff and sebastian, jerry springer, whoopie goldberg, hoobastank, slaughter, lots of baseball players including mikey mantle, kevin martin from candlebox, i know there's someone big i'm forgetting but i'm too distracted by the fact that amber has met richard hatch and james marsters!!!!

Posted by: laura at February 12, 2004 12:22 PM

I've seen George Micheal, Micheal Caine, Russell Crowe and Gwyneth Paltrow, all in my lunchbreak. Mind you that was over a period of 8 years...

Posted by: Fi at February 12, 2004 3:27 PM

Wow, a Matthew Good sighting...he is certainly someone I would love to sit with at a bar for a few drinks.

I ran into Robin Williams at a gift shop at Heathrow Airport when I was 15. I just said, "Hi, how are you," because he was with what I assume was his family. He replied, "Fine, thank you." I think he appreciated not being bothered with his family around.

I also saw Yakov Smirnoff on the Atlantic City boardwalk once...he was roller skating. I wanted to knock him over for being a talentless fucking moron.

A few years back I met Donald Sutherland. Since he lives just across the border from me in Canada it wasn't a huge surprise. I happened to stop at a little country store and met him in the liquor section. lol (it was Christmas Eve). I was carrying some Kahlua and was waiting behind him at the counter. He turned around and then asked me if this bottle of vodka he was carrying along with a couple other bottles of liquor was enough for one person..hahaha..Of course, I said "yes". He then pulled out a ratty old wallet and handed the cashier an American Express credit card, to which she replied, "I'm sorry we don't take that card"..LMAO! So he pulled out a different one.

After we had both made our purchases in that area of the store, we both headed over for the beer. Since Mr. Sutherland already had an armload he was carrying, I asked him if he needed a hand with his beer. He was greatfull for the help and we went to the front of the store and both cashed out. We talked for a minute outside, then wished each other a Merry Christmas. He was dressed in a long wool looking trench coat and was driving an old van. No one there made a big deal out of it, and we went our seperate ways. I only wished I had asked him how Keifer was..LOL

i met jon travolta. he signed my grease movie. what a hottie! i also saw johnathan brandis at disneyland with mario lopez (from saved by the bell). of course that was way before jonathan brandis committed sucide, so hopefully that sighting still counts!
