Death and Mayhem in the Tackiest Place On Earth

I'm sure Sweety will fill you in on all the details as soon as she returns home from her vacation to the States. But I'm feeling a little guilty (and, I'll admit, slightly amused) after an email I got from her yesterday. See, they're driving through California...

When Beth and I were out there a few years ago, as a goof we spent a night at possibly the tackiest place on earth. I mean, seriously. Check it out for yourself. Look at the restaurant and some of the many fine accomodations they offer. Believe me now? The room we were staying in had a wall sconce about the size of a small car and from it extended many sharp points. We were both convinced it was going to fall and kill us dead in the night. Obviously, it didn't. Anyway, I could go on about the tackiness but I think you get the idea.

So, I'd advised Sweety to cruise by the Madonna Inn when they drove through San Luis Obisbo. And they did! But they got an extra added bonus. To quote Sweety...

You funny man, you send me to the Madonna Inn on the day they discover dead bodies on their parking lot.

Its says the San Luis Obisbo Tribune. To Sweety, I'm sorry about that. I had no idea there'd be dead people involved in your visit. I was thinking you'd just check out the dining rooms and bathrooms and giggle. At the same time, what says more about America to its visitors than tackiness and death?

Well now I know what my grandmother did for work when she was younger ... decorated hotel rooms. YIKES.

Posted by: LOUP at December 23, 2004 8:37 AM

I nearly died just looking at the pictures of that place. I'm thinking I have figured out the cause of the mysterious body's death...

Posted by: Empress at December 23, 2004 8:45 AM

Hee. They apparently really like rocks. And massive amounts of floral patterns.

Posted by: Oliquig at December 23, 2004 8:51 AM

I can't believe you didn't link to the Caveman room.

Posted by: Mrs. Cactus at December 23, 2004 9:15 AM

Oh my god, that place is scary. I believe I'm going to have nightmares for the rest of my life.

And on the other hand, that small tacky part of me really wants to stay there, just so I can see it in person and have my very own pictures. "LOOK WHERE WE STAYED!!" rofl.

Posted by: Manda at December 23, 2004 9:24 AM

Oh, no! What crazy timing! I can't wait to read Sweety's recap.

That is definitely an insane-looking place, as well. The colors of the restaurant seating would be enough to make me lose my appetite. Haven't there been studies done about "mood-colors" that are supposed to be conducive to eating? THAT would definitely not be it. :)

Posted by: Zandria at December 23, 2004 9:28 AM

Holy moly!
Some of those rooms (okay, all of them) look like someone chewed up a crayon and got sick everywhere...*not a good mental picture, but you get my drift.*

I agree with Empress - I bet that guy was going to stay there and he saw the inside and it killed him. I don't think I'll EVER see a tackier place in my entire life.

Posted by: Kitty at December 23, 2004 9:30 AM

so, what exactly is your connection to the dead bodies? i mean, it's quite the coincidence that you'd send someone there at the same time they discover bodies...

Posted by: monique at December 23, 2004 9:35 AM

Wow. I didn't know Zsa Zsa Gabor was doing interior design.

You know, it's a coincidence, but I was just thinking that my home lacked that certain something which only a big vase full of ostrich feathers can provide...

Posted by: Debbie at December 23, 2004 9:40 AM

GAH! I am speechless.

Note to Madonna Inn - please fire the schizophrenic colorblind interior decorator.

I LOVED the antique car room. Antique car wallpaper, and floral bedspreads.

Ow. My eyes hurt now.

Posted by: Amy at December 23, 2004 10:12 AM

I think you discovered where all the Oops! paint from Home Depot gets used.

Posted by: Amy at December 23, 2004 10:20 AM

I have a feeling that place has many rooms adorned with velvet wallpaper. On the other hand, at least they didn't find dead bodies under the mattress (a la "Four Rooms").

Posted by: tone at December 23, 2004 10:29 AM

Holy shit, Batman, that is funny. That place is scary and knowing Sweety I am sure she was thoroughly amused.

Posted by: goodsnake at December 23, 2004 11:01 AM

Way to go Chris! ;)

Posted by: Stacey at December 23, 2004 11:07 AM

You want tacky. Try spending two nights in Minnesota, by the worlds largest mall. No it gets better.
Wait. For. It...

In a knock off Best Western that took Native American to the extreme. It had stuffed dead animals IN THE ROOM.

How Hiawatha, Big Boss no sleeping with dead wolf.

I can't make that shit up. Company paid too!! That is the sick part.

I cant top the dead people.

Posted by: stinkerbell at December 23, 2004 11:11 AM

Hey, what's the big deal? It's not a real vacaation until there are a few dead corpses to step over!

Posted by: RockStar Mommy at December 23, 2004 11:14 AM

You know they're totally going to make a Morgue/Cadaver Room now, for fans of "CSI" and whatnot. The Madonnas are sketching it AS WE SPEAK.

Posted by: Coleen at December 23, 2004 11:17 AM

It scares me to think there is actually a place as tacky as that here in Cali and it's only a few hours drive from me. I'm so laughing at that bed with the huge wheels on it! And all those color combinations. It's an assault on the eyes. It's like they had a tacky competition to see who could come up with the tackiest looking room.

Posted by: groovebunny at December 23, 2004 11:54 AM

Actually that place looks kinda interesting!

I mean, minus the dead bodies and stuff.

Posted by: Dawn (webmiztris) at December 23, 2004 12:43 PM

Ha ha ha!! I saw a link to that place on J-Walk last year or something. I laughed my ass off. Definitely an ODD place. Can't believe you stayed there! How fun! But the dead guy. Not so fun. I lived in a scary scary apartment complex in Tampa while I was in grad school and once on the way out in the morning saw a dead guy lying on the grass at the entrance to the complex. Thankfully the police were already there and beginning to cover him up. Gave me the creeps. Hopefully Sweetie has recovered.

Posted by: Heather at December 23, 2004 12:46 PM

OMG, I HAVE to have my next meeting there. Do you get commission for recommending the hotel to Sweetie?? How on earth did you find this place to begin with?

Posted by: bd at December 23, 2004 1:23 PM

I've stayed there before too. It is such a funky hotel, now it's even funkier. I'm sure she will forgive you though.

Posted by: Nicole at December 23, 2004 1:58 PM

I love the madonna inn...I pass it every time I go to LA...It is great. (oh and there is a good starbucks just down the street from it).

Bad about the dead body...

Oh and SLO (as it is called here) has another goodie: Mircobrewery!!!!

Posted by: AmyM at December 23, 2004 2:25 PM

i saw maybe one or two rooms i might consider staying in if we were there, lol. how funny!

Posted by: tiffanie at December 23, 2004 3:44 PM

Oh wow. So which room did you stay in that had the freaky wall sconce?

Posted by: Heather at December 23, 2004 3:48 PM

Reminds me of the CSI: Miami from Monday where the kid sent the flash MOB to the scene of where a body was. Except it's much different.

Posted by: Kimmer at December 23, 2004 5:46 PM

Oh my! Poor Sweety! How's that for a taste of good ol' America?

Posted by: Marie at December 23, 2004 6:23 PM

Oh Dear God! I'm so going to have to stay at this place! The only thing that could make it better is if it was in Las Vegas! This place is hilarious!

Posted by: zanie at December 23, 2004 7:24 PM

that sucks!!

there's so many better places to visit in CA....

Posted by: miss macy at December 23, 2004 8:11 PM

Oh man. I live half an hour from the Madonna Inn. Can I just say that they have really, really good pie? Cause they do.

Posted by: Heather at December 23, 2004 11:39 PM

Augh! My Eyes! Those are the colors of Bad Dreams...

Posted by: Anne A. at December 24, 2004 1:20 AM

Wishing you a merry christmas chris ... have a great one :) enjoy your time with your family :) *christmas hugs*

Posted by: Rosie at December 24, 2004 3:38 AM

Oh my... and which room did you stay in? How big is that place to have such huge rooms? Goodness.

Posted by: Mary Jo at December 24, 2004 7:51 AM

LMAO...I stayed in the Pepto Pink room with my honi! We loved the tackiness of it all...and the photos turned out great.

Serious good food though at least the night we stayed there on our way to Hearst Castle. But no dead bodies! That would have been more like work to me! ; ) Wink

There is something fun about tackiness in the extreme gaudy! It is a story to tell! : ) I am hoping we go back and stay in another room, not so pink! Giggle

Posted by: Gypsy at December 24, 2004 8:44 PM

WhoodieHoodie..that place looks like it was decorated by bi-polar porno movie set designers. Bow Chicka Wowow.
I'm headed to SanFran with an open agenda in Feb 2005 so I MUST stop by there and dig the vibe in that Caveman room!
