"Bupkis" Is A Funny Word

It's bright and early on a Monday morning. I'm here, in the office with a nice big cup of coffee, racking my brain in an attempt to come up with something simultaneously witty, enlightening and entertaining. You know what I got? Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero. Bupkis. At least in the witty post department. I've got a big effin' headache and a sleep deficit. But that's not entertaining.

Yesterday was quite the parenting challenge. I'm afraid there's a distinct possibility I didn't rise to it. You see, it became apparent around noon yesterday that Mia needed a nap. Eleven hours later, she fell asleep. The period in between was, well, just a tad stressful and ever-so-slightly frustrating. So, needless to say, I'm a little shell-shocked and worn out today. Not to mention feeling a little inadequate since I didn't seem to be able to do much to help the situation. About as useful as a wine steward on the Titanic as it went down. Or a toaster in an Amish kitchen. get the idea.

So, what were your weekends all about?

Posted by Chris at September 19, 2005 8:58 AM

Morning, Chris! Sorry you (and Mia and Beth) had a tough day yesterday. Try not to be too hard on yourself, it's tough to rise to that kind of occasion. We spent some hours getting a reluctant napper to sleep yesterday too, but not as bad as what you experienced. A few weeks makes a big difference ... when Mia's 3 or 4 months old it'll get a lot easier.

Brian and I spent the whole weekend avoiding responsibility whenever we could. With three kids, we've got to take the laziness where we can get it!

my weekend was all about cleaning. and eating chicken wings that have left me feeling a bit ill....
but i got new glasses, so all is well in my world.

hope you get some sleep today - either that or a really good caffeine buzz.

My weekend consisted of a marathon of 'That 70's Show' on FX, a crazy night at Bennigan's in which I 'maa-ed' like a sheep at a little kid that was screeching and shoving french fries down his diapers while dancing on a table (the parents thought it was cute-I thought otherwise..), that followed by a night of drinks and PlayStation2 karaoke, which then ended on a Sunday where I found out that the walk from my living room to my bedroom is quite a long one, which in turn resulted in an hour long nap before actually getting my ass in gear to get a shower(at 2pm). All in all...not very exciting.

MD and I babysat an 8mo. old yesterday afternoon and evening and got just a slight 'glimpse' of what it's like to not know what the HELL was going on.

He'd be good for like hours at a time and then POOF...he'd start screaming...diaper (check), food (check)....NOTHING we just waited it out...and it finished.....just like it started.....POOF!

one word: wedding.

It'll all be over so soon. Thank god.

Weekend boring at the Moo. Chef sick, I was on the computer too much. Stole your Monday 'ku idea, yet again, and went 'ku crazy this morning.

Hope your head feels better!

Posted by: mooalex at September 19, 2005 9:33 AM

Dude, that sucks sooo much! So sorry for you both!

I spent most of the weekend getting kicked in the ribs and under the hip bones, while having one particular stomach muscle stretched out beyond recognition.

I'll still take that over a screaming baby, anyday.

Posted by: shannon at September 19, 2005 9:48 AM

Well my weekend was spent doing the Flu Dizzy Dance...and laying on the couch!

You did not fail...parenting can be hard...babies cannot tell you what is wrong...and it makes you feel inadequate for the challenge. You are not inadequate, you have everything you need. Relax, breathe, and love. It is ok. You will get through this and on to the next challenge of parenting!

Nothing your child ever does reflects on you. They are their own people and sometimes babies are just cranky.

Posted by: Gypsy at September 19, 2005 10:21 AM

oooh sorry to hear that. It does get better...and? You'll get more sleep. Hang in there.

Posted by: Pamalamadingdong at September 19, 2005 10:32 AM

Insanity - my weekend as well. Registering for lovely wedding presents, finding my mother a dress for the wedding, buying OTHER people wedding presents, eating delectable Greek food, having lunch with an old friend, helping clean lovebugs out of a friend's house - and other stuff, too, like too little sleep. Oh, and a sushi restaurant that didn't believe in serving people very quickly. At least they plied us with alcoholic beverages, so we were happy - just hungry.

And Bupkis is a weird word. You should say say, 'Mia, your behavior is truly bupkis' and she'll know, you mean business.

Posted by: samantha at September 19, 2005 10:44 AM

good morning to you too. it would seem a bit odd, but please forgive me... for it seems that I stole some of Mia's sleep yesterday. I didn't mean to, I promise! You see, I was sitting in my chair getting ready for a full day of studying (because i'm behind and really needed to get on top of things!), and next thing I know, it's naptime already. I worked off and on for about 3 hours, made a few errands to wake myself up, had dinner... but every time I tried to study I would fall asleep (granted I already had PLENTY of it!) What's funny is that when 11pm came around, I was wide awake. go figure. Tell your child to get off of my sleep- wavelength!! and then, forgive me. ;P

hope the week gets better and your child sleeps more!

Ooh, ouch! Thanks for the reminder about days like that! Oh, man, I hate that! Glad to hear you're still alive-- How is Beth???

Posted by: jen at September 19, 2005 10:58 AM

Oh no! I've done that to Sierra too many times to count. Don't worry - it's not a mistake unless you don't learn from it, right? Now you know her signals...

Posted by: Marie at September 19, 2005 11:08 AM

Dude, that's harsh! Hope your head feels better. A Bloody Mary might help. The way I see it, difficult babies usually turn out easy later on and easy babies usually get more difficult as they get older. I would rather have the hard stuff up front and easy times later on! Of course, I am sure that is a totally bupkis theory, but it makes me feel better to think that way!

We? Went hiking in Palm Springs. It was cool. I really, really don't want to be at work right now. Why, oh why, is the weekend so bloody short? Gah!

Posted by: Ms. Q at September 19, 2005 11:21 AM

my w/end... 14 buckets of driveway sealer = $167.46
1 old pair of Nikes covered in slightly less tar than my legs= $45.00
spending the day swabbing gross smelling, tar like substance on your LONGER THAN HECK (being Pc here) driveway with your loved one= not priceless, in fact by the end of Saturday I was ready to seal MYSELF into the driveway

Posted by: stephanie at September 19, 2005 11:28 AM

sorry to hear that. coincidentally, my tot pulled the same shit yesterday that mia did. screaming, eye-rubbing, whining, yawning... but no sleeping. :-| a valuable lesson though-- never, EVER screw with the established sleeping schedule. hope your week is better!

Posted by: misifoota at September 19, 2005 11:34 AM

it's talk like a pirate day. let that get you through the monday.

Posted by: jodi at September 19, 2005 11:37 AM

My weekend resembled yours. My boyfriend's daughter woke up at two in the morning and didn't go to sleep again until five. She was up at seven after that and never took a nap. We were ALL cranky at that point.

Posted by: Betty at September 19, 2005 11:45 AM

I cried for about 3 hours yesterday too when it became painfully obvious that my beloved New England Patriots were going to lose their first game of the year. Against the panthers to, who I will hate for the rest of the season as a result. At least she eventually got sleep. My Pats still lost when I fell asleep. So stop your whining.

My weekend: Napping, grocery shopping, movie watching, dog park, lots of cooking, lots of Road tripping, and going to Open Houses just for the Heck of it. Yeah we're lazy. Very lazy. It was a good weekend.

Hoping Mia gets the whole Napping = GOOD thing soon. Maybe you could try reading her the tax code outloud :)

Posted by: wavybrains at September 19, 2005 12:03 PM

My weekend was eerily similar to yours. Except BabyJuJu is almost five months old now and SHE SHOULD KNOW BETTER. (Cue hysteria)Right?!

Posted by: JuJuBee at September 19, 2005 12:04 PM

I forgot it was International Talk Like A Pirate Day. I'll have to keep that in mind. I don't think I could get away with it at work though. Pity. ;)

Let's see....I performed in three shows, set my wedding date and paid a BIG ASS deposit, my Dad and fiance wired the garage (so I guess that wasn't really ME...), ate awesome pizza, fixed the computer, went for a hike, had dinner at future-father-in-law's, drank a bottle and a half of wine with friends and then crashed. God, I hate Mondays.

Posted by: carrster at September 19, 2005 12:18 PM

I've got a big effin' headache and a sleep deficit. But that's not entertaining.

You're wrong. That's hella entertaining. It's just not entertaining to YOU. *snort*

Posted by: Iki at September 19, 2005 12:47 PM

It's Monday. I got a free pass to stay home from the doctor. Now I'm feeling very much lazy.

Posted by: Queen Of Ass at September 19, 2005 2:29 PM

I woke up with a headache too. I think everyone is really feeling this Monday for whatever reason. One of my coworkers went the completely opposite way of the copy machine when she needed to make copies.

Hope your head is better!

I feel your pain. Our's is "teething" at the moment - that's code for OH-MY-GOD-YOU-CANNOT-REALLY-BE-MY-CHILD.

Posted by: HipMamaB at September 19, 2005 2:50 PM

i'll have to start working that into my daily conversations..bupkism you say, hmm.

Posted by: lizabetty at September 19, 2005 4:26 PM

Hahahahahaha, man your kid has KRAZY hair !!

Posted by: shaners at September 19, 2005 7:55 PM

Just remember, "Bupkis" spelled backwards is "SikPub". Which would account for the headache, and lack of creative ingenuity.

Blog on,

Poor baby and especially mommy and daddy. Thankfully those episodes are few and far between (for the most part). Think of it this way: It's Spring Training - She's just getting you in shape for puberty!! :-)

Posted by: Amy at September 19, 2005 11:45 PM

11 hours!? Ohh I can feel your pain. I'm ahsamed to say my weekend was great..... By the way, my hair looks like Mia's when I wake up in the morning. Poor Hot Wife

Posted by: AdventureDad at September 20, 2005 3:32 AM

I did pretty much the same thing as you - hugs.

Posted by: That Girl at September 20, 2005 7:13 AM

I'm glad you and Fish were able to get out to eat for a bit...even if the next day things didn't go so well. Mia just missed you two.
My weekend consisted of attending weddings and buying baby clothes. Thanks for asking!

Posted by: Jessica at September 20, 2005 2:32 PM

I'm late replying, but that's usual. This weekend we managed to get my new site up. Still lots to do to get it settled, but it's live and it's blue. Now if I could just get the pinger to work...

Posted by: etherian at September 20, 2005 2:39 PM

Who needs witty, enlightening and entertaining... you've got Mia. Just post pictures. :)

My weekend? Wow. Well, it was all about wild sex, flying to Stockholm for the grand opening of a friend's new art gallery, then back to Madrid for some more wild sex, then Cairo and Paris and Athens for even more wild sex.

Or maybe I slept in. I really can't remember all that clearly. Still, there are strong clues that wild sex was involved.

I, for once, had a fun and exciting weekend -- in Vegas, Baybeee! Gambled too much, ate too much, walked too much and slept too little. Next weekend? Back to my regularly-scheduled boring, do-nothing weekends. And I'm kinda lookin' forward to that!

Hope your week goes along better than Sunday did!
