The Weekend: Sushi, Grandparents and Bedhead

I know this will sound totally cliche. It's a question everyone's obligated to ask on a Monday morning, especially a rainy one. But...why are weekends so damn short? This weekend had everything going for it - great food, fabulous company and incredible weather. Why did it have to end?

Among the wonderful things Beth, Mia and I did this weekend was go out to lunch with Chicago's own Amazing Dawnie. Yep, Dawnie and a local friend of hers met the three of us for sushi. Neither Mia nor I actually consumed any sushi, as neither of us are fans. Sushi isn't quite fresh or raw enough for me. I prefer to wade out into the ocean, catch my food with my bare hands and eat it right there while I'm floating along with the current. I'm not calling you sushi-lovers wimps or anything but...

Lunch was fantastic. Dawnie was wonderful, as always. Mia behaved herself and only left the restaurant slightly dirty with cracker and cheerio remnants (it resembled a vast battlefield of fallen carbs, lying there, half-chewed). That was taxing enough for one day so the rest of the afternoon was spent playing.

Sunday shall hitherto be known as Visiting Grandparents Day. Each set descended upon us to see Mia, my parents dropping by in the morning fresh from their European travels, Beth's arriving in the evening so that we could head out to dinner. By ourselves. As a couple. Like, an actual date or something. We had a wonderful time and, of course, talked about nothing but Mia.

On a completely different note, you'll have noticed by the montage above that I did indeed take plenty of pictures this weekend (all of which can be found on my flickr site). I try my very best to pull back the curtain and let you in on all the little things that make up my life. Last week, I showed you some of the little spaces I inhabit. This week, something a little bit different. Lest you think my life is all glitz and glamour, I thought you should see the real me...the me that exists first thing in the morning.

The word you're looking for is hott...with two ts. And with that, I bid you adieu and happy Monday!

The dishwasher photo brings many laughs. We have many pictures of me crawling around in a cabinet with pots and pans. It makes you wonder: what happens in the mind of a child? However, my favorite is the one in the collage at top right. The composition of Mia with the pillows and the fluffy bed coupled with her fluffy legs -- it's priceless. It seems that you guys had a great weekend!

Posted by: Emily at June 12, 2006 7:21 AM

Holy. Crap. Now THAT is some serious bedhead. Whoa. Do you breakdance in your sleep?!

Posted by: Nicole at June 12, 2006 7:26 AM

Nice hair. Really really nice.

Just watch it letting Mia play in the diswasher like that. I let mine do the same thing. Sometime around the time my second was about 1 we had to replace the dishwasher door.

Glad you had a good weekend.

Mine was nice, too. An entire week. *sigh* The first day back after a week off is always the worst.

Posted by: Alissa at June 12, 2006 7:48 AM

and dirty

(cuz, like, you just got out of bed, right? no shower yet, right?)

Posted by: s@bd at June 12, 2006 8:07 AM

There's really nothing better on a rainy Floridian morning than to log into one of your favorite blogs and find pictures of cute baby....and wait...then....a reality shot....

must now find coffee...fast....

Posted by: PoeticaL at June 12, 2006 8:13 AM

is it bad that i think your hair looks really good like that????

Posted by: ali at June 12, 2006 8:31 AM

That has got to be the worst case of bed head I have ever seen. What do you when you sleep? Pull your hair in some kind of erotica induced dream or something? WOW,dude, that is some doo!

Posted by: Red at June 12, 2006 8:33 AM

Beautiful weekend here too, only mine consisted of yard-changing work. And because my hair looks similar to your picture, I must go shower. Now.

Posted by: angela marie at June 12, 2006 9:13 AM

Wow. Now we see where Mia gets her hair from. Cute picture of her in the dishwasher!

Posted by: Fraulein N at June 12, 2006 9:27 AM

hey, i didn't have to search very hard or very long for the word. you, sir, are the epitome of hottness, no matter the time. wow. look at me. i must of woken up on the complimentary side of the bed this morning. :D

Posted by: pea at June 12, 2006 9:31 AM

Wowie Kapowie! Thats amazing hair. I envy you Rudecactus! I recall Mia's hair being exactly the same way when she was younger, maybe you can get some grooming tips from her :P

Posted by: Dee at June 12, 2006 9:35 AM

why not three chris? GO FOR THREE. that's what i do.

p.s. did mia really get clean in the dishwasher? we always get this white filmy stuff...

Posted by: Sarcomical at June 12, 2006 9:37 AM

long time no see (or read... i guess...). The last time I read your blog you still refered to the fetus inside your wife as the bean, she does have a name now, right? I hope so...

Posted by: Melody at June 12, 2006 10:17 AM

Yeah, it's really unfair that weekends are only two days long. I think we should institute shorter work weeks and longer weekends much like the Europeans do.

Posted by: Beth in StL at June 12, 2006 10:19 AM

that Mia is getting SO DARN CUTE.

I love the dishwasher photo. I was looking at it trying to figure out why I don't remember my son ever climbing up on the dishwasher door like that and then I remembered: I didn't own a dishwasher until he was 5 years old.

Posted by: kalisah at June 12, 2006 10:25 AM

Gel is a good...GOOD thing.

Posted by: VirgoJen at June 12, 2006 10:27 AM

I love how worried you look, like "See what I have to deal with, people?"

Posted by: Alison at June 12, 2006 10:57 AM

No dishwasher but I did have a dryer door like that once. Too cute. I have one lower cupboard full of plastic bowls and other unbreakables that kids of three generations have found irresistable.

Posted by: ann adams at June 12, 2006 11:19 AM

Great idea on putting Mia in the dishwasher, I think we're going to start doing that with Baby Smoke. Do you run her on Regular wash or Pots & Pans? Heat Dry or Air?

As for the hair... be afraid, be very afraid.

Posted by: Johnny Smoke at June 12, 2006 11:31 AM

My hair does that same thing in the morning, as though I've spent the whole of the night tugging it straight up. But since I have curly hair, it's shut-yo-mouth scary looking and I shall not share.

As always, the photos (and the ladies) are beautiful.

Posted by: Elaine at June 12, 2006 11:59 AM

Cute pictures of the adorable baby...

I know why your hair looks like that... check out the pattern on the bed pillow. You can kinda make out a very angry face... I think that's why your hair is so frightening... it's frightened!

Only worse case of Bed head I've seen is on my 6 yo...

Posted by: Karen at June 12, 2006 11:59 AM

Love the pics of Mia! She is so beautiful! And I can see you're already training her to be a personal slave by letting her do the dishes...

Weekends are always short and I hate that. If you get alot done, or if you use the weekend to just relax, it doesn't matter. Suddenly you find yourself sitting at your desk in front of your computer trying to drink coffee and wake up. (And not grumble at your co-workers until after said coffee is consumed.) Ah well. Monday is one day closer to Friday!

Posted by: Kitty at June 12, 2006 12:20 PM

My daughter just said this morning "Why can't the weeks be on Saturday and Sunday and the weekends be on the rest of the days?"
I like the way that girl thinks!

Posted by: Traci at June 12, 2006 12:42 PM

I got off the plane here in Raleigh at 9:30 this morning. I'm at work right now. I don't get to leave until 9:00 tonight. I want to cry, I'm so exhausted.

Posted by: Rhonda at June 12, 2006 12:44 PM

Actually for the last picture the first thing that came to my mind was "omg he looks like my brother with his fauxhawk"

...but that's just me.

Posted by: ash at June 12, 2006 1:13 PM

Holy crap, you look like you could use some coffee!

Posted by: Jen at June 12, 2006 1:14 PM

That's um... a great new style you have kickin' there Chris. It's SHOCKINGLY good.

I will never get tired of telling you how beautiful your daughter is. She makes me what to have a whole huge shoe-full of kids.

Posted by: Tink at June 12, 2006 1:33 PM

Rhonda stole my comment! OMG U R SO HOTT!!1!!1!!

Nice hair, but I think Jimmy Fallon does that to his hair on purpose. And he is kind of yummy.

Sushi is good. And, if you are really in a Fear Factor mood, you know they can serve you live fish and live shrimp. They serve the shrimp tail raw and tempura the head so you can eat the whole thing! Waste not, want not, right?!

Posted by: Ms. Q at June 12, 2006 1:49 PM

your hair does that WITHOUT mousse? Sweet! Love the mia pix...keep 'em coming! Cute haiku.

Posted by: Dolly at June 12, 2006 2:56 PM

Just wanted to inform you and ask you if its alright that I have added you to my blogroll!

Posted by: Dee at June 12, 2006 3:40 PM

Oh wow. I think maybe you should add an extra "t" to that one! That is SMOKIN', baby!

Posted by: Queen of Ass at June 12, 2006 4:30 PM

You have Cosmo Kramer bed head like me! And Mia gets prettier all the time.

Posted by: Casey at June 12, 2006 4:44 PM

Hey, at least the hickie is gone! ;)

Posted by: Keri at June 12, 2006 4:54 PM

That "do" is very "in" right now. In a Zach Braff sort of way.

Posted by: chantel at June 12, 2006 5:30 PM

Oh, you look so punk! How cute! (I love punk boys.)

Your daughter is gorgeous. How old is she now?

Posted by: the weirdgirl at June 12, 2006 6:03 PM

Hot with two t's huh? I'll think about it. Cute maybe. But hott? You may be pushing it.

Sushi is not for wimps.

I adore the picture of Mia in the dishwasher.

And yes, weekends are too short. Whatever happened with that petition for Monday being added to the weekend?

Posted by: Melissa at June 12, 2006 6:21 PM

Or...as Nilbo would say..."HAWT!!"

Weekends are short because we don't use them for resting or relaxing anymore. The American work ethic makes us feel guilty for enjoying a single day which doesn't involve returning e-mail, crunching numbers, mowing or laundry. It's sad, really.

Posted by: wordgirl at June 12, 2006 6:59 PM

I agree with chantel, that look is very in right now!!

I'm loving the Mia pictures! She is such a cutie!

Posted by: Colleen at June 12, 2006 7:59 PM

Now I see where Mia gets her mohawk! :-)

I am glad you had such a good weekend. And I agree with you that there is some sort of psychology or sociology or some other -ology to the too-short weeekend enigma. It seems that Wednesday and Thursday are the LONGEST days EVER but Saturday and Sunday? Gone in a flash. It is an evil, evil trick.

Posted by: Snickrsnack-Katie at June 12, 2006 8:26 PM

That is some awesome morning hair!

Posted by: Kestrel at June 12, 2006 9:12 PM

Is that your wife giving your daughter a bath? BTW, nice hair.

Posted by: Dennis at June 12, 2006 9:23 PM

What is it with babies and dishwashers? I try to empty mine and Patrick is sliding the trays in and out and trying to get inside of it OR he's pulling the plates out. I'm sure when he's ten and I WANT him to pull the plates out he won't find it nearly as appealing.

But for now...we dun need no steenking toys!

Posted by: Izzy at June 12, 2006 10:04 PM

oh ya..totally hott! The dishwasher pic reminds me of my son. he is so fascinated by it.

Posted by: kristied at June 12, 2006 10:21 PM

Cute...but where are the bags under your eyes, mister? Tell the truth now, you actually washed your face first right? And had a mini facial complete with teabags BEFORE the photo? ;) Seriously, how is it you don't have that sleep-deprived look?!

Posted by: e at June 12, 2006 10:36 PM

I kinda like your hair like that. :) Funky.

Posted by: Heather at June 13, 2006 2:41 AM

Oh I miss the hickey so.

Posted by: BIll at June 13, 2006 7:17 AM

If there ever were a blogger's bedhead contest, you'd make top 10 - undoubtably. Perhaps we should get bookies involved?

Posted by: Betti at June 13, 2006 10:26 AM

Sounds like you had a great weekend!
By the way, that picture of you is awesome. I still have a hard time believing you wake up like that in the mornings, it must take time (and hairspray) to get your hair to look like that!!

Posted by: Ava at June 13, 2006 7:33 PM

She is honestly SUCH a doll. She could seriously be in many baby commercials if you were all hep on exploiting her...LOL.

I hope her dad learns to comb his hair by the time it's time to drop her off at the mall. Her friends would be SO embarrassed!

Posted by: Michelle at June 15, 2006 2:11 PM

That is totally fly hair. And a darling Mia, of course.
