His & Hers Harrys

Before reading, please be assured that nowhere in this post do I actually use any relevant facts gleaned from my reading, thus far, of the new Harry Potter novel. You need not shield your eyes, shove your fingers in your ears and run screaming from the computer. In short, if you are reading the latest adventure starring our intrepid hero, you won't find spoilers here.

Beth and I are both Harry Potter fans. We're not extreme fans. We don't line up outside bookstores at midnight. Well, we did that one time just for laughs. I spoke loudly while in line and remarked how much of a shame it was that our nephew Timmy couldn't be there to pick up the book due to the unfortunate lobster attack he'd been the victim of. Regardless, both Beth and I were out running errands separately on Saturday morning and we both returned home with a copy. Since then we've engaged in a little friendly competition to see who was making the most progress, teasing each other with fake plot points the entire time.

So, had you been able to overhear the conversations between Beth and I over the last few days you might have heard the following:

I can't believe it! I'm on page 65 and Harry's already dead. And the rest of the book is filled with line after line reading "All Harry and no play makes J.K. a dull girl."

Me: Have you gotten to the part where Hermione's dismembered by Harry's owl?
Beth: Yeah, that little bitch always annoyed me anyway.

The Weasley brothers better not all be related or that was one twisted fucking chapter.

Me: Hermione just took on the whole Quidditch team.
Beth: Didn't she do that in the last book?
Me: Maybe. They all run together for me.

Dumbledore really died from a crystal meth overdose? Man, that's hardcore.

Can you believe that Voldemort turned out to be star of stage and screen Robert Goulet? I always knew he was up to no good.

Who knew Hagrid and Buckbeak liked each other that way?

I finished it last night. That thing about Dumbledore and the Crystal Meth surprised me, too :-)

:) thanks for the intro!

I had to back up to Book IV and start from there. Now halfway through Book VI (which I'd read but forgotten I had).

Meantime, I'm trying to avoid any site with the words Harry or Potter but I trust you.

ROFLMAO! I'm reading too!

Posted by: Maribeth at July 24, 2007 8:13 AM

Well, I never thought Hedwig had it in her. Owls are mean, I just thought she was different somehow...

On a side note, your book cover is different that ours. Unless that's a previous edition and you have two of each...

Hermione is a muggle hooker.

Posted by: William at July 24, 2007 8:20 AM

Sure, on page 350 Harry goes mad and slaughters Hermione and Weasley's with an axe in the bathroom, which is accidentally known as the room 237.

Oh...

In an effort to read them all prior to the last one being released, I finished the first four in a month, but the fifth book? Evidently, they stopped editing her work after the first four and just published the entire manuscript. The story's everywhere and it's infuriating...seriously, who wants to read about a whiny teenage punk? I've heard that technically I could skip the fifth book and move on, but hell, I'm 400+ pages into it...quitting now wouldn't justify the pain already endured.

I want to go buy it but I know as soon as I do I won't get anything else accomplished. The hubs and I will have the same conversations.

Posted by: MammaLoves at July 24, 2007 10:09 AM

We, too, have his and hers copies. I finished this morning at 2:00 am. And now I need a nap.

Now that I'm done, the poor hubby won't have to listen to my occasional gasps of shock and teary sniffles, shouting, "Knock it off! You're giving it all away!" (Apparently, he can tell whether a gasp is an "Oh my god, Harry and Hagrid are making out!" gasp or an "I can't believe it! Voldemort IS Harry's father!" gasp. Sheesh.)

Dumbledore and Crystal Meth! Haha! :)

Posted by: sunchaser at July 24, 2007 10:36 AM

I took Harry to bed with me last night and read for a couple of hours. I'm about 3/4 of the way through. Dumbledore and crystal meth? Really? I had him pegged more for a prescription painkiller kind of guy....you know, laid back and all.

Posted by: alison at July 24, 2007 10:36 AM

Got mine at 3 p.m. Saturday. Finished 5 p.m. Sunday. LOVED it. :)

And by "Hermione just took on the whole Quidditch team", I hope you didn't mean what I think it means because I think they already made a movie about that...

Posted by: oakley at July 24, 2007 10:54 AM

Mine came yesterday at work. I had joked with one of my bosses about taking a personal day when it showed up...

Posted by: hannita at July 24, 2007 11:21 AM

Robert Goulet... *snickering*

Posted by: GreenCanary at July 24, 2007 11:34 AM

Mine came while I was out of town. It was all I could do not to ask D to drive it up to me when in came. However, I started it yesterday morning and read straight through to the end...

Posted by: Krush at July 24, 2007 11:41 AM

You should be careful. I hear there are cultures in which besmirching the name of Potter is tantamount to treason.

Posted by: Candy at July 24, 2007 11:49 AM

Dear Lord, please save me from Harry Potter madness. I cannot bear it much longer here at the library...

Posted by: Sphincter at July 24, 2007 12:06 PM

Well at least you two are reading it at the same time and can potentially talk about it with each other. My hubby couldn't remember a lick of book #6 when he started reading #7. He was confused and switched after two chapters to read book #6.

I started reading at 9:30 pm on Saturday. I got so into it that I read until 4:20 am. I finished the rest on Sunday. Now, I'm stuck waiting for my son to finish the book. It's killing me not being about to discuss the book in my home.

Though, he has questions every few chapters and wants clarification on what happened.

Posted by: Diane at July 24, 2007 12:12 PM

Best spoilers EVER.

(especially the Weasley part!)

Posted by: Isabel at July 24, 2007 12:54 PM

You know, I wondered if John and I had both wanted to read the book, would we have to buy two copies? Now I know.

I was less surprised by Voldemort being Robert Goulet than you might think :)

Posted by: bad penguin at July 24, 2007 1:14 PM

I've not gotten into the whole HP thing, yet... but soon I've promised myself to start at the beginning and read them all. Especially after reading this post! *snicker*

Posted by: sue at July 24, 2007 1:40 PM

I had a guy bring his book in and read it the whole time I was cutting his hair. He actually had the nerve to grunt at me when hair fell on his book and I had to move his head to get his haircut straight. I think there are just some things that you have to close the book to do.

Posted by: SarahS at July 24, 2007 2:04 PM

harry porno? man I bet if you searched the web you could find some.. yikes.

Having a sister who does stand in line at midnight makes getting the book infinitely easy. I merely have to wait the day for her to finish it. I had it in my hands by Sunday morning, was finished by Sunday night and now, thankfully, it's over. I have a bit of a love/hate thing for the books. I enjoy the story but I find Rowling's style more than a bit self-indulgent. All in all, I was satisfied though a bit annoyed because I thought the ending was such an easy way out. Then again, after all the hype, would any ending have done? Most likely not.

You guys crack my ass up. I've read it and I read it in the same room as my roomate....who was always about two chapters behind. I never told her a thing, even when she wanted me too.

And you're not fooling me, I'm sure you were there, in line with all the kids, cloak on and scar painted on your face.

Posted by: Phoenix at July 24, 2007 4:54 PM

What did you think of the Order of the Phoenix movie compared to the book?

Posted by: Dolly at July 24, 2007 7:41 PM

Robert Goulet! Voldemort! OF COURSE. It's so obvious once you know.

We're a two-book house as well. The first two readers finished in less than 24 hours. I'm on deck.

Haha! Too funny! I am reading it too. But I'm still on page 10 or so. Slow reader ;)

Posted by: Nadine at July 25, 2007 2:46 AM

That's exactly how I'd have written the book. I'd also throw in the Wolfman.

Posted by: Phil at July 25, 2007 9:06 AM

Robert Goulet. Oh man, you had me there.

Just finished, btw.

Posted by: Brad at July 25, 2007 10:23 AM

>>The Weasley brothers better not all be related or that was one twisted fucking chapter.<< LMAO.

Hoop keeps asking what the conclusion was. He's never read any of the books and doesn't plan to. After refusing to tell him for two days I finally said...

"Harry's GAY, OK?"

He yelled back, "I KNEW IT!"

Posted by: Tink at July 25, 2007 3:14 PM

Oh no! It ate my comment to your comment. I guess it didn't like the little carrots. Anyway... That made me laugh my ass off. I thought they were a little too close. ;)

Posted by: Tink at July 25, 2007 3:17 PM

Ha ha! I am more into that that, but not so into it that I don't appreciate your humor very much!

However, not so much into it that we got two copies. Bryan is patiently waiting for me to finish so he can start.

Talk about falling on the sword.

P.S. I am on page 571.

Posted by: aimee/greeblemonkey at July 25, 2007 5:09 PM

Boy, if the book doesn't have all this in it, I am going to be disappointed.

This sounds like a book worth reading.

Posted by: Bryan at July 25, 2007 5:21 PM

Priceless. I'm emailing this one to my boyfriend. I, like an idiot, finished the book at 7:30 am Saturday morning.

Posted by: Heather at July 26, 2007 6:10 PM

LOL! Love the Flickr picture "his and hers"... how cute! The hubster and I love reading HP too. I just finished the book today and am sad its all over. But at least we have two more movies to look forward to! :)

Posted by: Mary at July 27, 2007 2:51 AM

ROFLMAO!!! I finished mine this past Thursday night. It took me longer then usual because I had to work... and my family kept nagging me to cook meals and clean the house...Can you believe them?! LOL!

I loved this one...it was a good ending. I just did a review of my thoughts last night as a matter of fact on my site. I have the spoilers behind a "more" link though. I'd hate to ruin the fun for anyone else.
