Parenting, Stones Style
Mia: But Moooommmmmy, I don't want to eat any riiiiice.
Beth: Mia, I'm a little tired of hearing the whining.
Mia: But Mooooom. I want something else.
Beth: Well, Mia, you can't always get what you want.
Chris: But if you try sometime...
Beth: ...you find you get what you need.
Oh, I can't tell you how many times I've sung that song to my preschoolers back in my teaching days. Yup, it used to piss them off. And oh yeah, I kinda took a teeny ounce of pleasure in that. Just a tiny little bit, of course.
Posted by: morninglightmama at April 7, 2009 8:45 PMMy very first memories involving anger surrounded my parents spouting that crap at me! I later liked the song. And even later still got it. And later still chanted it to my kids (can't rightfully say "sang").
Cycle of life, baby...
Posted by: harmzie at April 7, 2009 10:17 PMWe had this conversation over English homework.
Posted by: Nat at April 7, 2009 10:24 PMIt's never too early to start teaching the classics.

Posted by: Hannah at April 8, 2009 5:50 AMLove it! Here are some other nuggets I've used on my kids:
"This isn't Burger King. You can't get it your way."
"Honey, if you're going to be dumb, you'd better be tough" (said after flinging themselves into the air from swing/slide/stairs/etc etc etc)
"This is not a democracy. This is a benevolent dictatorship, and we are in charge."
"You may be the princess, but I am still the Queen."
I love parenting!! lol

Posted by: Kris at April 8, 2009 9:24 AMhaaaa! My kids have heard this many times. Funny how their mother saying it to them and making them listen to the song a few times stops the phrase "I want _____" from coming out of their little mouths.
Posted by: Susan at April 8, 2009 4:16 PM"ahhhh yeah!" I have said that to my kids many times.....
Posted by: Peggy at April 8, 2009 6:34 PMawesome!
Posted by: cyndy at April 8, 2009 7:49 PMYou can imagine how often Bryan and I quote music to Declan and how often he thinks we are the unfunniest two people on the planet.
Posted by: Aimee Greeblemonkey at April 9, 2009 5:04 PMThat's fantastic!
