The Weeklies #132

The Weekly Lost Realization. We're just going to end up with as many questions as we started with, aren't we?

The Weekly Mind Blowing Illusion. Check this out. Seriously. It'll blow your mind.

The Weekly Read. I finished Sam Lipsyte's The Ask last night. It was strange, slightly absurd, manic and entirely fantastic. What most impressed me was Lipsyte's writing. I think I have a pretty good vocabulary but I had to use my handy iPad's dictionary more than once. And I also found myself using the iPad to highlight passages of the novel that just blew me away. Lipsyte is one of those guys who can write extraordinarily and not make the average reader feel stupid in the process.

The Weekly Music. If you were alive during or have any fondness for the 80s, you remember the band Asia. They were a supergroup featuring guys from prog bands such as King Crimson, Yes, and Emerson Lake & Palmer. They turned in two hugely successful bland arena-rock albums before guitarist Steve Howe left. Since then that time there have been as many line-up changes as there have been funky Lady Ga-Ga outfits. A couple years back, though, the original members got back together and recorded an exceedingly dull album, Phoenix (yeah, the rise-from-the-ashes cliche...how original). And now they've done it again with Omega. Why do I keep buying this stuff? Because I love the members' former bands. But when they all get together, it's a snoozefest.

The Weekly Schadenfreude. Apparently, after 20 seasons, NBC has pulled the plug on Law & Order. SVU is safe but the original series is dead. Dude, that just ain't right.

The Weekly Question. Who doesn't have a sex tape? They seem to be popping up everywhere. Do you?

Very cool illusion. If I could I would incororate that illusion inot my sex tape, you know to make things appear bigger.

The illusion is crazy! I still don't really get it; I think I'd have to see it in real life to understand. (I mean, in theory, sure, but I can't figure what the actual shape is and what angles we must have been looking from, and what not.)
Confession: I watch SVU sometimes, and not the original. I used to watch the original, and then I stopped. Mariska Hargitay's character is a big reason why I like it, and that's probably one of the reasons she's one of the highest paid actresses on TV. Because she's likable, I mean, not just because I like her, obviously, though that would be really cool if that was all correlated because I could get some really stupid things OFF TV and keep awesome shows from being canceled.
And...I have no sex tape. I have no sex. My life is sad ;)

I would watch the original L&O as long as it stays around although it lost something special when Jerry Orbach died.

Now I'll have to settle for the reruns.

Dude, WHAT? No more L&O Mothership? And they're keeping that soapfest SVU on the air? Talk about criminal, man. I guess it just wasn't the same after Lenny left...

Me? A sex tape? Yeah, right! Haha!
Wait. I have a tape of my dachshund "breeding" in Germany last year, does that count?

And now they've done it again with Omega. Why do I keep buying this stuff?

******

Maybe it was THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT.

I actually *blush* made one when I was about 19. He has custody of it. All these years later, I cringe when thinking about it.

Posted by: debb at May 14, 2010 11:20 AM

MMMM.... King Crimson.... MMmmm... Yes.

The second could be a band, could be the answer to your question. You decide.

I love that optical illusions - very cool.

Sex tape? Of me, no! But, as a behavioral researcher, I probably have the largest spider pornography collection in the state of Virginia. Not too much of a market for it, though. Besides, in the thick of "it", they look more like a great gob of legs than anything else.

Aw, Law and Order? Man, that's too bad.

I. do. not. have. a. sex. tape. I've learned by proxy from celebrities that sex tapes are a BAD idea.

That illusion was awesome. And I clicked on the link to see more of them. The sidewalk/street paintings have always amazed me. It's just insane.

Do I have a sex tape? Why...did you find mine?!?

Posted by: js at May 14, 2010 12:25 PM

I don't have a sex tape but if I were famous, I totally would. Then when my fame started slipping I could arrange to have it stolen, thus creating a scandal and putting me back in the spotlight. And then hopefully I could be on Dancing With the Stars or something.

I do not have a sex tape, but I wouldn't mind seeing Kendra's.

Posted by: Rex at May 14, 2010 7:15 PM

Nope, no tapes here. A combination of women's insecurity and my knowledge that there's no such thing as fool-proof way to keep that private will keep it away forever.

Posted by: Brad at May 14, 2010 10:05 PM

lol! Nope, no sex tape here... but there are photos out there somewhere that probably shouldn't be! Evil drunken hotel parties! Who said someone could bring a camera?

Posted by: Debra at May 14, 2010 11:32 PM

Well, I do not have a sex tape. And for this reason, the world is a better place.

Posted by: Nat at May 15, 2010 9:46 AM

L&O got me through my first maternity leave (I mean, in addition to the Beautiful Child, um, of course, ahem), four (different episode) times a day.

As for the sex tapes, I'm with Nat (in, ahem, opinion only): you're welcome world. I imagine it would be like Rachel & Ross viewing their accidental sex tape: "wow! you were looking pretty buff and -- ew, ew, ew, ew, ew, shut it off...!!"

Posted by: harmzie at May 16, 2010 10:31 PM

I do not have a sex tape. I always think of Eleen Degeneres's bit about sex tapes when I hear about the: People make them for two reasons, either instructional (Did you make that up? I thought so. Don't do that.) or because they think they are THAT GOOD (Look at you, look at ME!). People never learn.
