The Weeklies #136

The Weekly Time Waster. Ragdoll Tennis.

The Weekly Winner. Susan wins! Yes, Susan was the randomly chosen winner. Now, I got 52 comments on that post and I sincerely wish I felt comfortable asking Marshall to sign 52 books for me. But he's co-authoring a book with James Patterson right now, promoting his latest release, and there's even the possibility that Lomax and Biggs are headed to the small screen. So, he's a busy guy. But I'm sure I can get a couple more copies so if you're not Susan, you're probably not out of luck yet.

The Weekly Best Sandwich Name Ever. The McGangBang. Take a McDonald's chicken sandwich and stuff it inside a cheeseburger. And there you go. Now, let's just hope no one comes up with a McRomanHelmet.

The Weekly Read. As I mentioned earlier in the week, I read Richard Lovenheim's In The Neighborhood. It wasn't a brilliantly written novel but, as you could probably tell from my post, it made an impression. Thanks to all of you who commented on Monday. It was interesting for me to hear your experiences.

The Weekly Music. A while back, I raved about Grace Potter & The Nocturnals' This Is Somewhere. It was a damn fine album. So I was pretty jazzed when the latest came out. And I had good reason to be jazzed. My initial impression is that it's not quite as strong as previous releases, in that it's more polished and less gritty. That said, it's a damn fine album. Highly recommended.

The Weekly Site I Wish Didn't Have To Exist. Dailydeadbirds.com keeps track of all the bird and turtle casualties of the Gulf Coast oil spill.

The Weekly Schadenfreude. Ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod! Speidi is splitting up? Ohmygod...that's...wait...who the fuck cares?

The Weekly Question. What's the most overrated movie ever made?

Definitely Titanic. I mean, I never even saw it. THE DAMN BOAT SINKS. And I don't care about some dumbass love story and necklace and painting and whatever else was in it.

Posted by: Stephanie at June 11, 2010 7:10 AM

Either Titanic or Forrest Gump. I can't decide.

Posted by: Elise at June 11, 2010 7:49 AM

Congrats Susan! I guess I can stop waiting by my mailbox for now. FYI, I tried to put the new book on hold at the library and it won't let me... now I'm very sad!

Posted by: Kim at June 11, 2010 8:20 AM

Yeah, I had to google "speidi" because I didn't even know who it stood for (for whom it stood?).

Posted by: Julie at June 11, 2010 9:01 AM

Hurray! I'm very excited to read this book. Thanks again for the giveaway, Chris, and send my best to Marshall!

Posted by: Susan at June 11, 2010 9:01 AM

Ummmm... who is speidi... I see Julie looked it up. Well damn it...

Most over-rated movie ever made... I have a list, it includes: Titanic and Dazed and Confused are on it, as are many war films you all know and, I'm sure, love.

Posted by: Nat at June 11, 2010 9:10 AM

How funny. Titanic is also my answer, and I never saw it either. Another movie that bores me to tears, that everyone else LOVES, is that Christmas story with the leg lamp. Ugh.

You cracked me up with the speidi reference.

Posted by: Pat at June 11, 2010 9:31 AM

Dude, USC and Pete Carroll definitely win the weekly schadenfreude for me this week.

As for most overrated movie? Hm. Tough one. I thought the Big Lebowski was just meh. Please don't throw things at me.

Posted by: pseudostoops at June 11, 2010 9:43 AM

Goodfellas was a movie that I had always heard about but never seen, so we rented it and watched it last year. It was kind of boring. Mainly I remember him being a flipped out druggy and kind of an outcast loser. Not a great title character. I guess one or two scenes can make a movie though and so the "you tink I'm some kind of fuckin' comedian?" scene wins the movie over.

Posted by: Brad at June 11, 2010 9:54 AM

I lurve Grace Potter & the Nocturnals. I don't know if you've got Nothing But the Water yet, but I love that album too. I'm downloading the newest now. I didn't even realize it was out yet. Thanks!

Posted by: Rachel at June 11, 2010 10:09 AM

ooh - overrated most overrated movie? For me, a tie between Titanic and Shakespeare in Love. That is all.

Posted by: Sue R at June 11, 2010 10:18 AM

Strange, I was thinking on the drive in that I was glad that Speidi was heading for a break up. Always nice to see these things reach their logical conclusions ( like stars ultimately super novaing...it's just no fun if they turn into a dwarf, how dull! )

Most overrated for me is Avatar. Haven't seen it, don't plan on seeing it, and really, James Cameron, you could have poured all that money and energy into saving the Terminator franchise. There is a story that is much more relevant than a bunch of hippies fighting for the survival of some aborigines against the evil corporate interests after "Unobtanium"...seriously, why not call it "McGuffium". * sigh *

Now, in the flip side of that, let's hear it for one of the most underrated movies ever: Fifth Element. Now THAT is sci fi! :)

Have a great weekend Chris!

Underrated movie--The Freshman, I think that is the name with the dad going to school with his kid. Stupid.

Also, congrats Susan. I just called Borders and my copy I pre-ordered in March will not be in until next week....WTF?

As for speidi what can you expect when you have 10 cosmetic surgeries at once? It had to take a little of your soul as well, you know the part that attracted.....hell, nevermind.

Posted by: debb at June 11, 2010 10:57 AM

Overrated movie would be those Ocean 11 movies. Never saw them but all the hype about who was in them was a turnoff.

Posted by: greenie at June 11, 2010 11:00 AM

Wow! He's writing with Patterson? Awesome! I like James Patterson! Look forward to that one.

Speidi...why are they famous? And why the heck should we care? Don't get it.

Overrated movie? Yeah, I'll go with Titanic or Avatar. Actually, let's go with 3D movies - what the heck! Why is everything gotta be in 3D and why do I have to pay more for it??

Have a great weekend!

Posted by: cyndy at June 11, 2010 11:36 AM

Most overrated movie is Avatar. Predictable story, boring characters, silly dialogue, and I'm not impressed by 3D yet. I'm a huge sci-fi fan and I have no desire to see it again.

Posted by: Drew at June 11, 2010 11:42 AM

Always enjoyable to expand one's vocabulary. I had to look up "Roman Helmet" in the urban dictionary...and so...now I know.

Posted by: James Proffitt at June 11, 2010 12:31 PM

Saturday Night Fever.

Posted by: kali at June 11, 2010 12:38 PM

Blasphemy Pat! A Christmas Story is one of the greatest movies EVER! One of my biggest joys in life is walking around the whole month of December quoting it.

Most overrated movie is definitely Avatar. I was prepared to be amazed and all I got was...FernGully.

Posted by: Holly at June 11, 2010 12:45 PM

I heard the whole Speidi thing might've been a hoax for (surprise, surprise) publicity. Oh dear!
I could probably second (or third, fourth, etc) the opinions on Avatar. I mean, yes, it was visually stunning - but I guess they were working too hard on that to have a halfway decent or remotely original plot :P

Posted by: Heather at June 11, 2010 1:42 PM

LOL, Holly! That's exactly what we said about Avatar! It's Fern Gully! Which was Geronimo to begin with.

For me, recently, it was definitely Sherlock Holmes. I was so freakin' excited to see that movie - and when I finally did - I was just praying it would end. Quickly. I even considered walking out. It was a HUGE disappointment.

I have seen that website before. It makes me cry. The whole thing makes me cry.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Posted by: Mindy at June 11, 2010 1:42 PM

Most overrated - Avatar. Unfortunately, my son didn't think so, and we now own it. Meh.

Posted by: HollyB at June 11, 2010 4:52 PM

Ok, add me to the list of those who didn't get the 'Speidi" reference. Considering I get my 'news' from the tabloid covers at the supermarket I suppose I should be outraged!
Most overrated movie? Well, I don't know if this was ever highly rated, but considering the cast - The Road to Wellville. I saw it in a Theatre and I really, really want my two hours back. Considering it came out in 1994, that either says a lot about my ability to hold a grudge or the extreme, major suckitude of this movie. Probably both. Also, Brazil. Didn't get it, not willing to pretend I did just so I can seem cool.
Can't wait to read Marshall's new book. He obviously has fans here in the armpit of the frozen north as I'm 4th on the library waiting list here. Think I'll toodle off to Amazon and order it now. Cheers.

Posted by: Jen at June 11, 2010 7:32 PM

Forrest Gump. Blech. I also thought Slumdog Millionaire was pretty to look at but ultimately a whole lotta nothing.

Posted by: Laura Gato at June 11, 2010 9:06 PM

I, too, had to google "roman helmet." and then clean the vanilla caramel tea off of my blackberry.
Most overrated movie? Ali. Its like there was a whole first DVD I didn't get. Or maybe cloverfield...they still owe me $7.

Posted by: tifRN at June 12, 2010 10:43 PM

Whoever said The Oceans 11 movies were overrated - well I have to disagree - they had an all star cast and they were great. The first movie was much better than the other two though.... And I get tons of hits on my heist blog from people google searching Oceans Eleven every day!!

I think Napoleon Dynamite was overrated. I thought it was one of the stupidest movies I've ever seen. Though I still have no desire to see Avatar....

Posted by: Rose @Dozenroses13 at June 13, 2010 12:48 AM

Just downloaded The Rabbit Factory for my kindle. It's about third in my queue. Just finishd the third of the Larsson "TheGirl Who..."books. Loved thema ll.
Overrated movie? Many of them. Most recently, Sherlock Holmes.

Posted by: Lojo at June 13, 2010 9:17 PM

Wow. Now if McGangBang can make it onto official McD's menus, I'd buy one just for proof it exists! I don't think I would eat it though as their food more often then not makes me sick.

Overrated movies... maybe not generally overrated, but I had a chat friend recommend Bitter Moon to me over and over and over again for months. His favorite movie ever. Best movie ever. You get the picture? I Netflix'd it, put it in, and after 33 minutes (and the 4th sex scene) my bf and I turned it off because it was like watching a really bad soft core porn. The gir wasn't even that attractive.

Posted by: Debra at June 14, 2010 4:54 AM

Titanic, it was just boring.

Posted by: mikkie at June 14, 2010 5:10 AM

I'm voting Avatar, Bob.

Posted by: Poppy at June 14, 2010 5:05 PM

I propose not to wait until you get big sum of cash to buy different goods! You should get the credit loans or term loan and feel yourself comfortable

Posted by: KATHIEBurnett32 at August 9, 2010 2:30 AM

I think Avatar is biggest hit of all time.

Posted by: Mesothelioma at September 27, 2010 8:10 AM

oh titanic I agree was definately one of the most boring, maybe right beside perl harbor, I actually walked out of the theater on that one
