Dorothy, 2008-2011

On Saturday afternoon, June 4, 2011, and after over two and a half years of loyalty to Mia, Dorothy The Goldfish passed away.

Beth discovered Dorothy's passing just as she was finishing up getting Mia tucked in. We voted to tell her in the morning then we both thought better of it. When we both walked into her room she knew that something was up. First she smiled then she seemed to sense that bad news was coming. I told her Dorothy was gone and her face fell. To say that the news was not well-received would be something of an understatement. Mia was devastated.

Services for Dorothy were held yesterday morning. Dorothy lies in our backyard, under a newly purchased and planted foxglove. Dorothy's body will nourish the plant and we will forever be able to see her beauty when she and the flowers bloom each spring.

Safe home, Dorothy.

We have two Bearded Dragon Lizards pushing up daisies in our herb garden. Vay con Dios, Dorothy.

Our first deceased pet (a chameleon) enriched the soil in a nearby park. We moved on to the ceremonial bathroom burial at sea (aka toilet) when fish died.

Hugs and condolences to Mia. Losing a pet is so very hard, but what a lovely idea to bury her in the garden with a beautiful flower - she will always be near!

My thoughts are with Mia in her time of need. I think that Dorothy's sendoff is very appropriate, and I'm glad to hear that she lived to a very ripe old age for a goldfish.

Rest In Peace, dear departed Dorothy, and condolences to Miss Mia.

When my daughters' first fish died last year, it was the most horrible thing that they had ever gone through - it was rough.

Big hugs to Mia...

I have to admit, when I first saw the title, I had a moment of sheer dread so hearing it was "only" the fish was a bit of a relief, but still, I am sorry for Mia and hope that she heals from the hurt <3

I am so very sorry for your loss. What a great tribute to Dorothy, and a great plant to lay her to rest under. :)

Oh my goodness, its a fish- but somehow even still I teared up at that tribute paragraph.

Sorry about Dorothy. I thought my son would be devastated when his first fish died. I worked myself up over how to tell him and after going through my spiel, his response was "Why am I supposed to be sad?" (he was 3!).

Just a word of warning about the foxglove: it's where digoxin comes from, and can be toxic (how toxic is species dependent) so don't let your kids nibble on it!

Oh Mia, I am so sorry for your loss of Dorothy. She was a noble fish.
