The Weeklies #181

The Weekly Option. Read or listen.

The Weekly Beer. Any. It's been a week.

The Weekly Technology Obsession. Have you heard of Spotify? It's about 100 shades of awesome. I've got three invites up for grabs that I'll give out to randomly chosen commenters.

The Weekly Seasoning. Old Bay.

The Weekly Read. Marcus Stakey's The Blade Itself wasn't a novel crime, um, novel. It didn't break any new ground especially if you'd seen the movie The Town. But it was compelling nonetheless. It was quite well-written for an often terribly-written genre. The Silent Land topped Stephen King's top summer reading list and Joyce has always been a favorite of mine. The Silent Land itself wasn't really anything new. It was startlingly like an eerie end-of-times novel King would have written crossed with a few episodes of Lost. If you pay attention, you'll solve the mystery long before the book ends. But that doesn't make the book any less fun to read.

The Weekly Music. I'm a progressive rock geek. I've copped to it before and I'll cop to it again. One of my favorite bands as a kid was Yes. You know them as either 80's pop sensations (Owner of a Lonely Heart) or 70's prog epic-writers (Close To The Edge, I've Seen All Good People). It's been 10 years since they released an album and their revolving door of personnel opened and closed a few more times. But what emerged in the form of Fly From Here is really pretty darn good. It's not the best thing they've released - they haven't released a truly magical album in thirty years - but it's a nice return to creative form.

The Weekly Schadenfreude. I'm tired of talking about the damn debt ceiling.

The Weekly Question. Want a Spotify invite?

I *just* saw a segment on Spotify on some news show the other day and was thinking it sounded super cool! Hoping someone will invite me :)

Posted by: Kate M at July 29, 2011 7:36 AM

Spotify sounds awesome and much better than playlist. Maybe I'll score the invite so I can groove to some great songs I am missing. And seriously, the debt ceiling is making me Ker-ai-zee!!!

Posted by: Becki at July 29, 2011 8:27 AM

I would love the invite!!

I too am tired of the damn debt ceiling and love your dedication to Congress :)

Posted by: Elizabeth at July 29, 2011 8:52 AM

I am diggin the listening option.
And loving your dedication to Congress.
It's been a week here too.

Posted by: varinia at July 29, 2011 9:04 AM

No thank you. I need to spend less time on this computer as it is.
Have a happy weekend!

Posted by: Maribeth at July 29, 2011 9:10 AM

While I do not want a Spotvite (love how I'm making up words here?) I DO want to e-high five about it. Cause it's badass. Even if they won't let me use it at work. I've been digging up old songs from middle school and playing 'em, just for fun. LOVE.

PLUS: YAY for Design Star. I watch Selling New York, and it was fun to watch the HGTV executives try to find the right house for the Design Star cast to live in. Which is not really related. But still.

PLUS: Yay for the podcast. I <3 the podcast.

Posted by: Emily at July 29, 2011 9:18 AM

Yes was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. I had no idea they had another album out. When did I get so old and out of touch? Yikes.

Posted by: Beth at July 29, 2011 9:29 AM

I want an invite!

Posted by: ashley at July 29, 2011 11:15 AM

I'd listen but I'm at work.

Weekly Answer: I have a Spotify account already, but maybe you can help me understand why Spotify is so much cooler than other streaming sites. I've asked my Facebook friends but I think they think that I'm being a confrontational old lady. Is streaming music you don't have to buy really all that or does Spotify do something else that I don't know about? I'm confused as to why it's so many shades awesomer than Pandora or Grooveshark, etc.

Posted by: Brooke at July 29, 2011 11:52 AM

I want a spotify invite :-)

Posted by: Amy at July 29, 2011 11:59 AM

I've heard bad things about what Spotify offers, the worst of which concern the ridiculously high population of karaoke versions of songs (??) and the relatively low populations of everything else. I need someone to describe what's so great about it and what makes it better than, say, Grooveshark or Pandora or Last.fm.

Posted by: You can call me, 'Sir' at July 29, 2011 12:04 PM

Spotify me, please.

Posted by: Jesse at July 29, 2011 12:14 PM

Congress needs to take a lesson from the NFL and figure it out...we heard so much less about the NFL negotiations and they're fixed.

Would like a Spotify invite if you have an left.

Have a wonderful, and hopefully less event-filled, weekend!

Posted by: Krush at July 29, 2011 1:44 PM

Oops, that should say "if you have any left"... :-|

Posted by: Krush at July 29, 2011 1:44 PM

randomly pick me, please :)

Posted by: kati at July 29, 2011 1:49 PM

I sure wouldn't mind an invite!

Posted by: Tera at July 29, 2011 3:03 PM

I'd be very interested in Spotify. Thanks!

Posted by: Doug at July 29, 2011 4:25 PM

I would love to try Spotify - sounds prety cool from the comments. I would feel so "ahead of the curve" around here (not that its that hard to do in Mobile)

:)

Hope your weekend is better!!

Posted by: Kristin in Mobile at July 29, 2011 4:35 PM

I sooo want a Spotify invite.

Do you want a Google+ invite, or are y'all already trying that out? (It's a beta, and very, well, beta-fied...but I much prefer the settings to those of Facebook, and it's almost completely obliterated my Twitter obsession. Scary.)

LOVED hearing your voice ~ you should be in radio, dude! You sound like a cross between David Lee Roth (!!) and someone else I can't place. (Maybe someone from my real life? I'm not sure.) Anyway, that rocked.

Have a great weekend!

Posted by: Kim at July 29, 2011 5:24 PM

I'd love an invite..make my day :)

Posted by: karen at July 30, 2011 2:33 AM

HMMMM....as it sounds "totally rockin" as a Deaf person I am not sure I would be worthy of getting an invite...give it to someone who "hears with their ears..." If you have anything in the book section SIGN ME UP!
HUGS!

"Owner of a lonely heart... much better than a.. owner of a broken heart..."

Totally odd to hear your voice.

Yes only has one original member left? Really?

Will look at spotify... you know if you send me an invite? Or am I too late for that?

Posted by: Nat at July 30, 2011 2:36 PM

I've had Spotify premium ever since it came to NL a bit more than a year ago. I wouldn't know what to do without it any more.
