On an average day I get over a dozen emails asking me to blog about a specific topic (Vacationing With Children!), read an article (10 Ways To Keep Your Kids Hydrated During The Summer), feature a picture (We hope you'll post this still shot from the latest Disney movie), conduct an interview (Interview the self-published sci-fi romance novelist today!) or review a product (I'll send you one toilet brush to keep and another to give away to your readers). And on an average day I'm left scratching my head wondering why?

The simple fact is that I generally get more pimp-mail than I do comments. My site states tell me that, yes, a few folks still dutifully drop by instead of using Google Reader or another news aggregator. But still, traffic has slowed down over the years. Long story short, I'm not your best bet, especially considering that I've made it clear I refuse 99% of any offers like these.

When I started blogging it was the wild west out here. Everyone had an opinion and everyone built a blog to share it. Over time, though, while the amount of individual blogs has decreased (drastically!) the number of PR-type folks glomming onto bloggers has skyrocketed. Which leads me to questions. Are bloggers really so influential? Or are we just an easier, cheaper way to schill products no one really needs?

We need to get on a Do Not Pimp List. Either that or I just need to suck it up, go all in, buy a cane and a big-ass hat with a feather in it.

I went through a period a few years ago when I was getting free stereos, free digital photo frames, and all sorts of other stuff in exchange for writing a post about it. I was always completely upfront about it being a sponsored post, and I usually went for the humor and didn't do anything resembling a serious review.

I guess the PR firms knew what they were doing because through some weird quirk of Google my blog would rocket onto the first page of search results just anytime I wrote about anything. I took just about every offer because the challenge of writing an interesting post about some of the stuff was fun.

The PR firms quit calling - so I guess Google figured out that I'm not that influential :)

I think the Huffington type of Blogs probably are, but the sort of thing you and I write are still sweetly untainted and "pure". I keep going because I believe that the world needs to know, that there are still nice people like me left out there.

I'm a pre-bean reader (I won't ever forget the announcement photos!) and can't see myself ever adding you to my RSS feed - that gets mostly ignored every day - while I read your posts over my morning coffee.

You can send your pimplets my way - I have been blogging for ever, and haven't ever been contacted - but then again, I'm not actually their 'target market'. Heh.

I think influence is what you make it. I am much more a supporter blogs that have content that means something - rather than just posting for posting's sake. If a writer's 'signal to noise' ratio is off - I stop reading.

I say suck it up and take advantage of it.
I think you should agree to do anything via a blurb at the end of your regular post (like your Monday haikus) for $5 a pop....then stick that money in to a college fund. It will take an extra 5 minutes of your time each day to make $1300/yr for your kids.

Make sure you take a pic of that pimp outfit! P.S. I never used readers; I visit your site the old fashioned way.

You definitely need a pimp-cane. It's weird that you posted this today because I was just about to ask you... how much has your traffic dropped off in the past couple of years in comparison to the hearty blogging days of say, 2006, 2007?

I'll admit, the feedback was a big part of why I blogged. I took a break and lost all of my readers so there wasn't a ton of motivation to get back into it. I can see why you would keep it up though. It still looks like a lot of fun to me.

I don't use RSS, but I look forward to reading your blog each weekday. I like the idea of a Do Not Pimp logo for your site (maybe your photo wearing the outfit???).

Apparently they all think you have the hat and cane already! Big Pimpin' :)

i'm still here! and i like that you don't do a million reviews and obvious schilling. i've told you before, i am a fickle blog reader. as a mom i don't have a lot of time to read blogs or comment, i usually stick to just photography blogs to keep track of the industry, but i always read yours even if i don't comment!

heehee--now I want to ask you to post a photo of the pink fuzzy cowboy hat you're wearing but then you'd call me a pimp comment...

I think you'd look pretty sharp with a feathered hat and cane!

I must be one of the dwindling few who come to the site. It is on my bookmarks and I think you're cool and interesting to hear from.

I will send you one pimp cane to keep, and another to share with your readers...

I've been a reader off and on since Before the Bean. I don't think I've commented since '07, but I still like to check in. I do enjoy the fact that you haven't become a corporate shill.

I have to admit, I don't come through the feed reader as much as I used to. (Probably you knew this already, what with your super secret internet Skillz.) I refrain from commenting more because I'm not feeling like I have anything original or intelligent to say lately...but I didn't let that stop me, today ;)

J'ai pensé qu'il allait y avoir une certaine message ennuyeux, mais c'est vraiment compensé pour mon temps. Je vais poster un lien vers cette page sur mon blog. Je suis sûr que mes visiteurs trouveront que très utile4342323
