Chloe 2012-2012

In fond remembrance of Chloe, hermit crab, 2012-2012.

Chloe was found deceased in her habitat at approximately 7:33 PM on the evening of Sunday, November 4, 2012. Chloe's loved ones were nearby. There were no signs of foul play.

Chloe's owner - Mia - was despondent, remembering the night on the boardwalk when she first spotted Chloe in her vaguely Rastafarian-colored shell. Tears were shed - many of them - and the search for an appropriate pet resumed.

Chloe is survived by Batman, a three month old hermit crab who paced around his habitat nervously on Saturday night as if he knew something was awry.

Rest in peace Chloe.

*observing a solemn and appropriate moment of silence* My heartfelt condolences, Miss Mia.

My first real experience with death was my hermit crab, Max. And I still remember the exact scene of Pee Wee's Big Adventure I was watching when my mother told me.

Poor Mia! It's always so traumatic to lose a loved pet (albeit a very short-time love).

I remember caretaking our hermit crab from school for the weekend, safely(!) putting his aquarium on top of the fireplace mantel.

Saturday morning...check the aquarium...NO hermit crab! I looked everywhere, panic rising in my throat. No luck.

Later that morning I was getting my baby brother dressed and trying to put his shoe on. Inside his baby shoe was the hermit crab!

I have no idea how long that journey must have taken, but he was one adventurous hermit crab, not only for the enormous trek but for his out-of-the-box thinking of what he wanted for his next "home". Shells were apparently SO last week...

Good luck on the new pet hunt.
