Date Night Movie Review

Last night I went on a date - with my wife of course! After a quick dinner, we went and saw Harry Potter and the Pensioner of Kazakhstan. Side note to all of you who hate crowded theaters - when a big summer blockbuster hits theaters, wait till the following Wednesday evening. There was nobody there! Anyway, the movie? It was good. I won't say great, fantastic, marvelous, frickin' incredible or even damn fine. Good will just have to do.

The problem for me is that, despite the fact that I am a Harry Potter fan*, the books and the movies run together for me. I couldn't tell you if the movie lived up to the book because frankly the details of the book are all squashed up inside my head with the details of the other books.

Overall, Y Tu Potter Tambien looked very cool and was a little more intense than its two predecessors. Some of the outdoor scenes looked a little too sound-stagey and there was little involvement with supporting characters. And not enough Gary Oldman! But don't let all that deter you. Its definitely worth catching on the big screen.

*This is evidenced by the fact that my wife and I, on a very warm June night, stood in a very long line for the last novel, Colonel Potter and the Order of the 4077. We felt as if we were the only adults without kids in tow. So, we made up stuff and talked really loud about our fake nephew Timmy who couldn't be there with us because of a vicious lobster attack. People still looked at us funny but at least we were amused.

Just a reminder:
Whatever you do, don't forget that Oliquig is hosting the Thursday Haiku Smackdown today!

hehehe that was the first thing I said when I left the theater... There just wasn't enough Sirius time. Of course, he is my favorite character.

My two roommates and I went to get the Last Harry Potter at midnight when it came out as well. We definately did not have children in tow, but what was really fun was watching some of my college professors who I knew did not have kids standing around waiting for their copies of the book too. The only reason I am so down on the movie, is that this really was my favorite book, and is one of my all time favorite books. I really hoped that this book above all others would be captured properly. Oh well...

We went to the 10:15 show on the night it opened and it wasn't even remotly crowded. I felt the movie was a let down as well; it left out too many crucial things. But that's just me.

I love Harry Potter too and I MAKE my son go with me to see it.

I don't know if I want to see it or not. Rob is making me read the books first -- he says the books are just sooooo way better than the movies, but also that I won't know what's going on if I don't read them first.

Meh. I say, Meh.

I was like goodsnake...just a bit disappointed that this one, of all the movies, wasn't truer to the book...b/c it's one of my favorites. I also screwed up by re-reading it a few weeks before the movie (it had been a long time before for the other two), and so I remembered every setting and every line of dialogue as it should be...so I felt letdown through several parts. Now that I've come to peace w/ all that, though...I'm very excited to see it again next week w/out having to worry about all that. :) Loved the darker tone to this one...that's one thing they got right.

Maybe we'll get a couple of rent-a-kids to go with us when we venture out to the Newest H.P. movie. There's always lots of kids around here who would like to go with us.
