Luck, Vibes and Freaking Out

Tomorrow morning, to some hitherto unknown (by me) degree, life will change. It feels less like I'm at the edge of a cliff looking down, than at the bottom of a cliff looking up, trying to catch a glimpse of some of the footholds I'll eventually have to find. Oh, and have I mentioned that I'm freaking the fuck out so I can pretty much only focus on that whole foothold thing for, like, 4.34 seconds, max.

Tomorrow brings new light for everyone and new life for a few...including my daughter. Wish us luck, send us some good vibes, and don't freak out if you don't hear from us until Saturday. We'll check in soon.

Posted by Chris at July 21, 2005 09:30 PM

Good luck! We're all rooting for you guys! And don't forget pictures! (I know I know...LIke that would happen...but seriously? It's a baby. YOUR baby. You'll forget your own damn name before the day's over with.)

Chris and Beth,
I wish you both the best tomorrow as you welcome your angel into the world! Know that there is a whole world of "strangers" that can not wait to see her and watch you as you relish in all your glory as parents. I know without a doubt that your daughter is very blessed to have the two of you for parents and it all comes to you naturally.

What a blessing for you both to bring a sweet new little girl into this world. It is your deepest love for each other coming to life in your child.

You will both fall in love like you never knew possible tomorrow as she is born. You are in my thoughts and prayers. You will be fine. Blessings!

(please give her a sweet little forehead kiss from "Auntie T".)

I've been thinking of the two of you all day as I've prepared for my new life with paint and furniture, thinking of how much monumental it must feel to be thinking of meeting your daughter.

Remember all of that silly breathing. And if she calls you mean things, remember that she doesn't mean it. And keep kleenex handy. People usually cry when having babies (I used to work in a hospital...).

I'm so excited for you both! I can't wait to hear that everyone is happy and healthy. :o)

As the only dad in attendance, I'll let you in on a secret.

You know at the end of "Dr. Strangelove", when Slim Pickens rides the A-bomb to his destiny, a-whoopin' and a-hollerin'?

You'll know how he felt. Only the ending is much, much better. Cheers!

Posted by: Jason at July 21, 2005 11:20 PM

Oh, Chris and Beth, good luck and Godspeed!

I have been getting so teary about this-- I'm sure it's not the champagne...

Posted by: Jen at July 21, 2005 11:22 PM

Best of luck to you Chris, and also to Beth and the Bean. Freaking out is the natural male reaction to such an occurance. We really have very little to do with the whole thing and nuturing usually isn't our bag. I think that's what makes the cliff look so daunting. You'll be fine, the footholds reveal themselves at just the right moment. Have fun.

Posted by: j.tonic at July 21, 2005 11:22 PM

Ohhhhh...I cried over that beautiful picture this a.m. over at Beth's and I'm crying here now. Bless all three of you as Bean is brought into the world, proof of your love for each other!

Take care of each other and your beloved daughter. This is the highlight of your lives together.

Oh yeah, and whoever said to have tissue handy was dead on! I sob uncontrollably at all of my births! It's the most unprofessional thing I could do but I just can't help it!

Hugs to you all.

My gift to you, on this, the night before your wonderful daughter arrives. Blessings to you and Beth.

Baby's First Day

Wonder of all wonderment!
Momentous moment when small form
First feels life in itself.
When new eyes open wide
On old, old world.
When tiny hands handle air;
Touch tenderness and love.
When ears first wake to sound
And silent lips find voice and food.
Soon newly wakened baby wearies.
World will keep.
Being born is quite enough
For one short day.
Baby hands rest;
Baby mouth yawns;
Baby eyes close in sleep.

(Poem by Mary Dawson Hughes)

You go and have a beautiful baby, I'm on the edge of my seat here, on vacation....but actually closer to you guys now than when I''m at home :) My thoughts are with you guys...

All my good thoughts and prayers and wishes and hopes are aimed in your direction. Every one has new chapters in their life; this is a whole new volume.
It's been wonderful sharing this up to now and I'm so looking forward to hearing about the new beginnings, hands on. And what a gift to us all that a new child is being welcomed to the world with so much love and care.

Posted by: vicki at July 22, 2005 01:32 AM

Congratulations! And love the picture. I do that one a lot with the pregnant mamas.

There is nothing like a daughter. And there's nothing like a daddy with his daughter. You're about to embark on a truly life-changing relationship (trying not to sound super-schmaltzy, but hey - if you can't get schmaltzy about childbirth and becoming a daddy, what CAN you get schmaltzy about? And also, I'm trying to see how many times I can use schmaltzy in one paragraph. Four is the max, I think.

Really, when we had our first daughter, it was like everything else fell away and life, and the wonder of it all become crystal clear. Granted, that came after/during the wretched labor, the (yes) tearing (sorry), the three months of colic every night starting at 10, and lasting, almost without fail, for three hours, and the zombie-groggy-exhausto state you're in for the first few weeks, uh - make that months. But truly, you can totally use that against them when they're horrible, angsty, rebellious teenagers. And really, if we don't have that as parents, what do we have? =)

All kidding aside, when you look into those little eyes for the first time, and she grasps your finger with her tiny, little, perfect, half-moon-paper-thin-nail fingers your world will seriously tilt. It's magical. You don't realize how full your heart can be until you're a parent. The love is so completely different than the love you have for your spouse. They're equal, but different.

I wish you both an easy labor, friends to bring you dinner and family to come over so you can sleep a few hours. It's an amazing, joyous time. And of course, I don't have to remind you to take loads of photos of these first few weeks, as it seems like they (literally) change daily...I'm sure our kids will probably be in competition for most photographed children in history.

After 92 comments there's not much I can add. You will discover things about yourself you hate, things you love about life you missed and find an overwhelming need to make the world a little better. It will all come in a tiny package less than 10 pounds. Remember to tell your wife, "Thank you," because you are a decent human being and remember it's just like your wedding, it's all about her tomorrow. You're just there for support. The next 3 months aren't about sleep. They're about 3 things, they cry because they are dirty, hungry or sleepy. Everytime you change a diper, that little bean will probably have to change yours in a few decades. So put in what you want to get out.
