Schadenfreude Friday

Schadenfreude - pleasure taken from someone else's misfortune.

I'm not going to talk smack about art because everyone's different and everyone likes different stuff. That said, there's almost no part of this story, about pop-artist, "Painter of Light" Thomas Kinkade, that doesn't crack me up. Don't worry about reading it. I'm more than happy to give you the completely one-sided highlights.

In sworn testimony and interviews, they recount incidents in which an allegedly drunken Kinkade heckled illusionists Siegfried & Roy in Las Vegas, cursed a former employee's wife who came to his aid when he fell off a barstool, and palmed a startled woman's breasts at a signing party in South Bend, Ind.

I sincerely hope it wasn't this incident which caused that tiger to freak out. Painter of Light, Decapitator of Illusionists.

"He approached [her] and he palmed her breasts and he said, 'These are great tits!' " Ernie Dodson, another Cote employee, told The Times, adding that he drank no alcohol that night. "I was just standing in the corner in amazement. It was like, holy cow!"

Well, artists are quirky. Apparently this one isn't too bright...and only slightly self-centered. His explanation?

"But you've got to remember," he said, "I'm the idol to these women who are there. They sell my work every day, you know. They're enamored with any attention I would give them. I don't know what kind of flirting they were trying to do with me. I don't recall what was going on that night."

My favorite part, however, is this:

And then there is Kinkade's proclivity for "ritual territory marking," as he called it, which allegedly manifested itself in the late 1990s outside the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim. "This one's for you, Walt," the artist quipped late one night as he urinated on a Winnie the Pooh figure.

And there you go, my loser of the week. Who's yours?

Do you mean besides George W. Bush? I'm taking terrific joy in the fact that even his own people are NOT backing him up in the whole Dubai Ports Debaucle.

I fancy myself an artist, though not presently practicing. I have never considered TK even a mediocre artist. He cranks out commercial less-than-so-so work with not an ounce of originality and not much more talent. While I agree, a lot of us are "quirky" as you say, in our own way, if there is a category for him, "artist" ain't it. Pop or otherwise. Idiot may do.

LOL - my dog, for eating an entire bag of baby shit, then turning her nose up at some fallen Cherrios beneath the baby's highchair.

Posted by: Marie at March 10, 2006 07:59 AM

What a gentle soul. How obnoxious can you get? I wonder what his wife thinks.

I have a friend who is an artist, and she says that the artistic community scorns him and his work.

Posted by: cas at March 10, 2006 08:01 AM

My dentist.

Posted by: jen at March 10, 2006 08:02 AM

I don't no why, but this makes me so happy. I've always wanted to hate this guy. I hate his art, I hate his marketing methods. Now, I CAN hate HIM, too! Thanks, Chris!

Posted by: Kris at March 10, 2006 08:14 AM

He sells very well here (or the style of "painting" does). Makes me miss San Francisco even more.

Posted by: ann adams at March 10, 2006 08:14 AM

Holy. Effing. Crap. What a tool! I think people should do some "ritual territory marking" on the pieces of crap that he calls art.

Posted by: mooalex at March 10, 2006 08:22 AM

Chris, you had me at "drunken Kinkade." Happy Friday!

Posted by: Fraulein N at March 10, 2006 08:57 AM

I'm not quite awake yet this morning, so forgive me if I misunderstand your query. The most recent (10 minutes ago) schadenfreude I witnessed was at a pathetic little site called trainwrecks dot net. Sad, really. I read the two most recent posts and had to go take a shower. Ick. I hope they think they are being funny, because that, and only that, will redeem their petty, black little souls.

Posted by: Northern_Girl at March 10, 2006 09:19 AM

So many schadenfreudes, so little time.....

Happy Friday Rude!

Posted by: Wicked H at March 10, 2006 09:26 AM

The Kinkades have kids who go to our elementary school. I find his work schlocky and overpriced. Everyone acts like he's a big deal and I have no idea why.

Posted by: wordgirl at March 10, 2006 09:28 AM

Now I have even more reason to despise Kincade, yay!

Posted by: A.K. at March 10, 2006 10:06 AM

OMG!!! I am completely floored! I love Thomas Kinkade's Art. I have several prints (I can't afford anything other then a print, lol) hanging in my house. Who woulda thunk that the artist, who makes so many beautiful paintings, is a complete self-centered, stuck-up, moron?!! LMAO!!!

loser of the week... hmmm... I think yours beat anything I could think up, lolol

Posted by: Tammy at March 10, 2006 10:24 AM

I just used Thomas Kincaide, Painter of Light as an example of all that is cheesey and corny last night. And now, I found out he's a drunken lecher peeing on Winnie the Pooh! Even more reasons to dislike him, although his crappy, uninspired art is enough.

My loser of the week is Condi Rice. Do you really think that Iran is the biggest problem facing this country, Condi? Really? I have a hard time buying that.

Posted by: bad penguin at March 10, 2006 10:33 AM

Wow, yeah, now I dislike Kinkade the person as much as I'd previously disliked his paintings. What a wank!

I think Dubya is my nearly-perpetual loser of the week. I do a little Snoopy happy dance every time I hear his approval rating has gone down.

Anyway, Happy Friday, y'all.

Posted by: Kate the Shrew at March 10, 2006 11:03 AM

As I am too lazy to actually read the article....is this real? As in the true "painter of light" did this? Because? I LOVE IT. His stuff sucks and I wouldn't even call him a real "artist". Nope. He's just some hack that has sold his soul to the Devil. And this is why housewives across the nation love him. Gross.

(and isn't he some huge Christian? Extra impressive!)

Posted by: Isabel at March 10, 2006 11:10 AM

I HATE Thomas Kincaid. I have a blog friend who does too. I can't wait to e-mail her about your post. heehee. What a loser. George of the Whitehouse is my pick!

Posted by: Lisa B at March 10, 2006 11:13 AM

HaaaaHaaaaHaaaa! Hysterical.
Kincaid is seriously, one of the worst artists with any sort of popularity out there. I keep having a discussion with my friends about how when something is labeled "Christian" people eat it up, solely for the label, not because it's any good. Left Behind series, John Maxwell, Thomas Kincaid, all examples of this sad state of affairs.

Posted by: Hannah at March 10, 2006 11:30 AM

oh GAWD, what an egotistical maniac. I don't understand why so many women worship his work so much. A lot of home interior art features his work and it's good, but I'm sure as hell not going to let me grab my boobs! Now Johnny Depp, that's a different story....

Posted by: Dawn (webmiztris) at March 10, 2006 11:43 AM

Johnny Depp can grope me anytime!!!

Excellent! I am going to be housesitting for the whole next week in a beautiful mansion filled with... drumroll... Thomas Kincaid paintings. I have always hated those paintings. Thank you for giving me a reason to laugh when I see them instead of just doing my usual eye roll. Heee!

Loser of the week has to be... me. Just because.

Posted by: Ms. Q at March 10, 2006 12:15 PM

South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds.

Posted by: jodi at March 10, 2006 12:44 PM

Yeah Chris! When are you going to use your superpowers to facilitate a Johnny Depp grope-a-thon??? C'MON! It would be so easy for you and bring so much JOY!! ;)

Posted by: Deepblue at March 10, 2006 02:14 PM

That's hillarious. I know so many uber-Christians that love his work. I wonder what they'll say if they find out all this stuff. Ha!

Posted by: Jessie at March 10, 2006 02:49 PM

I want to know how you can not be drunk but say, I don't remember a thing. Shit, then we should drug test your ass, you idiot. At least saying you were drunk would be a good excuse. I've never liked him or his art.

Posted by: Melissa at March 10, 2006 02:50 PM

Good gracious! I just googled Kinkade because although I had heard the name I did not know what his "art" looks like. Horrible! It looks like the crap that they hang in cheap hotels and sell at those art shows at airport hotels. {{shudder}}

Posted by: Pinky at March 10, 2006 02:51 PM

Excellent! I always knew he was an asshat from those boring, fluffy, and cheap paintings he produces. This just furthers my anti-TKPOT campaign. Thanks Lisa for sending me this!!

And my pick: George W.

Posted by: Sugared Harpy at March 10, 2006 03:02 PM

I didn't realize people actually buy the stuff. I thought the whole marketing thing was just a sad attempt at selling something seriously sucky.

Wow.

My loser of the week? My father.

Posted by: candace at March 10, 2006 03:54 PM

OH MY GOD. That is the funniest thing I have heard in a long time.

Posted by: betty at March 10, 2006 04:57 PM

That is just so warped. His paintings are pretty...but that's it.
(As a songwriter, when someone tells me one of my songs is pretty, I take it as a grave insult.)

Posted by: Heather at March 10, 2006 05:47 PM

Should we believe everything we read?

Posted by: Lyn at March 10, 2006 07:05 PM

Good grief. Nothing says "high art" like having your own retail store (rolls eyes until they hurt). I love the fan in the article who says, "There is no one in our generation who can paint like that." Obviously she doesn't get out much.

Posted by: Sheryl at March 10, 2006 07:14 PM

Loser of the week - since Jodi already picked South Dakota's governor I'll go with Barry Bonds.

Posted by: Beth in StL at March 10, 2006 10:45 PM

So, once again, a German reference (word). I am becoming more convinced you have some German programming in you! Where did you find out that word?

Posted by: Krista at March 11, 2006 12:48 AM

I didn't read the rest of the comments, so maybe someone else already mentioned this...but isn't he the "artist" who has a 'factory' of workers actually cranking out his 'work?' What a guy.

Posted by: Marilyn at March 11, 2006 01:22 AM

Heh heh. I enjoyed this post on a variety of levels, most of which have already been alluded to by your other readers. Thanks for sharing this juicy tidbit, I hadn't heard a thing about it previous to reading your post! :)

Posted by: Kristina at March 11, 2006 12:20 PM

Hilarious! I've always thought Kincade was nothing other than a Home Interiors Expample Of Poor Sheeplike Decor. I may not be an art expert but I do know crap when I see it.

There was a big scandal a few years back about his retail outlets and how they got swindled out of the huge investments they made. I don't remember all the details but I know he got his azz sued six ways til Tuesday.

Posted by: Lisa at March 11, 2006 05:26 PM

Holy crap. I have heard Schadenfreude twice today. The other time was in reference as to what to give up for lent.
