All These Things That I've Done

Upon conception, Mia inherited much of my genetic matter. While the jury is still out, she was most likely infused with, among other things, my vibrant wit, insightful wisdom, devil-may-care attitude, rockin' musical ability, inability to say no, knowledge of inane trivia, opinion that burping and farting are indeed quite funny, ability to drive Beth crazy, admiration of literature, and over-all wicked-cool sense of style. That was a monumental day. This weekend though? All I gave her was my cold.

Yesterday morning, Mia woke up and immediately began acting odd. It didn't take us long to noodle everything through. She had a fever. My fever. See, sometime over night my fever broke. Not so much broke as jumped ship. Unfortunately I wasn't awake or I would have grabbed a box of Kleenex and a thermometer, stood on the bed and done battle with the germs, chasing them out of the open window. I got no opportunity to wage this war. And now I feel a little guilty. I let the germ terrorists win. Mission not accomplished.

Being sick is never a good thing and I wouldn't wish even the slightest, most inconsequential cold on my daughter. But yesterday evening, when Beth ran out for dinner and Mia was inconsolable, I pulled her close and for once this squirming mass of cute toddler wasn't so eager to escape from my lap. Instead she seemed comforted to have my arms around her. She rubbed the tears from her face with my shirt, looked up at me a smiled. And I knew that, while I'd passed on much of myself to her, she made me who I am today. A dad.

It's awful, ain't it? You hate for 'em to get sick but on the up side, they slow down for 2 seconds and let you snuggle.

Y'all fell better. And keep your stinkin' germs to yourself. (That kind of thing is why I laughed everytime someone suggested I go to nursing school. I'm pretty sure 'compassion' and 'empathy' are pretty high on the required traits list and I seem to be lacking)

That is the sweetest thing I have read in a long time. Sorry about the cold though...toddler's and colds do not mix well.

No reply necessary :)

No words... I can't wait to see my husband become "a dad" someday - hopefully sooner than later.
Glad to read your feeling better, hopefully Mia gets over it quickly.

Well, I'm glad you're feeling better. It IS possible that Mia has a totally different cold, you know. Kids can do that. At any rate, let's hope she feels better soon, too. And take advantage of the opportunities for cuddling while you can...

Posted by: Alissa at September 26, 2006 07:56 AM

I hope both of you feel better soon. And try not to pass that cold along to Beth.

Awww, very sweet.

Wishing the Bean a speedy recovery.

I remember there was this one little boy at daycare that was hell on wheels. Whenever he got sick, however, he was the sweetest, calmest little boy. I always knew when he was running a fever because he'd actually listen and behave. As nice as that was, I really hated seeing him sick. There's just something about a child being miserable with a cold that is a little too much to bear.

As for you being a dad, she's a very fortunate little girl. She's got a lifetime full of love and acceptance ahead of her and it'll be a joy to watch her grow into all of those things you and Beth have passed along while at the same time finding her own voice. I envy you that.

Little germs are okay. On the back end they actually make you stronger.

Look what they did for you together.

Posted by: Pammer at September 26, 2006 08:48 AM

awwwww....that was so sweet.

Just wait until she does that and then asks for $20 bucks and the car keys? who will you be then?

Posted by: linda at September 26, 2006 08:54 AM

Awww. Hopefully her cold will jump ship quickly, too.

Posted by: Fraulein N at September 26, 2006 08:57 AM

Awww. So the germ terrorists brought you closer. They suck, but they strengthened your spirit! LOL!

Hope she gets better soon and I'm glad you are on the mend.

Posted by: E :) at September 26, 2006 08:58 AM

I could stand almost anything, but when my kids were sick. Hugs to you and Mia, to get well quickly and to Beth for putting up with you both!!!

Posted by: Maribeth at September 26, 2006 09:01 AM

Don't feel too bad, she'll repay you in spades once she starts school and brings home all kinds of germs.
Hope she feels better soon. Smooches for Mia.

Posted by: Traci at September 26, 2006 09:11 AM

Shame it's not a weekend. Beth was looking for a way to get even only yesterday.

Hope she's better soon.

Posted by: ann adams at September 26, 2006 09:34 AM

I agree with Pammer, the more they are sick with common colds the healthier they become. While that's a plus, it's still no fun. I coated my kids in Baby Vick's Vapo when they were younger and sick. Nothing like a kid that can't figure out how to breath through the mouth. Thanks for the visit, that was a refreshing surprise!

Posted by: BID at September 26, 2006 09:48 AM

wicked camera skills.
i can only assume that mia got that from you :)

i hope she feels better soon. sick kids are sooo sad.

Posted by: ali at September 26, 2006 09:55 AM

Awww.. Sorry she sick, but that is so sweet!

hope everyone is feel good soon, and that the germ war is defeated quickly!

Posted by: molly at September 26, 2006 10:12 AM

Well, I came here to say something like what Pammer did, but she did a great job. I can't improve on her comment. So go reread it.

Posted by: Alison at September 26, 2006 10:13 AM

Awwwwww, that's very sweet.

And there really is nothing like a virus to take the edge off a toddler and give you your snuggle-baby back.

Chris, I've loved your music recommendation and Itunes lists in the past. Any new groups/albums you like? I dig your musical tastes.

Posted by: Ashley at September 26, 2006 10:30 AM

Hey, thx for the message.....I hope you and your little girl are better soon. it sucks when kids are sick......with those glassy little eyes. but it is one of the few times they will let you continually cuddle them. thx again....

Posted by: Mad Mom at September 26, 2006 10:36 AM

All that cuddling makes the snot-smeared shirt you were wearing later TOTALLY worth it.

Posted by: wordgirl at September 26, 2006 11:20 AM

wait till she says the word... you will just melt! oh well. we all get colds. someday soon she will be passing hers on to you. hug and kisses and lots of liquids... and sleep. for everyone!

hope she gets well soon. :-)

Posted by: melanie at September 26, 2006 11:22 AM

Aww. I can see the entire scene in my head. That's just sweet.

I remembered playing doctor to my very sick dad, trying to make him feel better, and ened up with his viral flu thingy.

Sometime you just can't get the baby girl away from her dad! Yes, we'll even get sick just to do that. (Well, days off school are also nice...hehe.) ;-)

Feel better, you two!

Posted by: oakley at September 26, 2006 11:35 AM

I'm going to cry. Because there wasn't one curse word in that post. Please feel better soon. I need blog cussing!

Posted by: E at September 26, 2006 11:53 AM

Well now you've done it! :) Just kidding, I'm sure you feel guilty enough....you do, right?! hahahaha

Get well wishes to Mia, that was a sweet post, dad.

Oh and P.S. I'm now singing the Killers, is that what you wanted?

Posted by: Kate at September 26, 2006 12:05 PM

I hate crying at work. Thanks, Chris :p

Posted by: Sparkle Pants at September 26, 2006 12:12 PM

Too sweet! (what you said, not that Mia is sick)
Hope she is feeling better asap.

Posted by: Danielle at September 26, 2006 12:14 PM

You know I know that it sucks when they get sick. BIG TIME!!! However those few moments of sheer and totally unexplainable full-on toddler love are the most amazing things!! The little boogers know how to rock your world and make it stop all on the turn of a dime! My two little guys are champion sleep stealers but the love is sooooo worth it! Hold that bug tight!!!

Posted by: CJ at September 26, 2006 12:15 PM

That's so sweet!! Thats all I needed, another reason to want kids. Damn it.

Posted by: Pixie at September 26, 2006 12:18 PM

Awwwwww.

Posted by: Heather at September 26, 2006 01:02 PM

It sucks to be sick. I'm glad you are getting better, though, because toddlers that are sick are just miserable. I know mine will never let me wipe his nose, but will rub it all over my shirt while he snuggles. Price of being a mom: Snot shirt.

Posted by: FFF at September 26, 2006 02:57 PM

yup, ya can't live with your kids and ya can't kill 'em. although sometimes you'd like to. and then they do something PRECIOUS and remind you just how much you love them.

Posted by: notsoccer mom at September 26, 2006 03:11 PM

Oh yeah, it sucks that Mia got your cold, but you've got to grab all the snuggling you can before she's suddenly no longer small enough to even fit in your lap. **Sigh**

Hope she feels better soon!

Posted by: Evil Genius at September 26, 2006 03:55 PM

There's nothing that can make a parent feel more helpless than when the kid's sick.

Posted by: Queen of Ass at September 26, 2006 04:34 PM

Oh, poor Mia. Hope she gets to feeling better soon!

Posted by: Beth in StL at September 26, 2006 07:14 PM

Awww. God I miss the snuggling. Sigh.

Posted by: Lisa B at September 26, 2006 07:38 PM

Oh, so sweet. My kids still like to snuggle, but especially when they're feeling icky.

I hope Mia is feeling better toot-sweet.

Posted by: candace at September 26, 2006 08:46 PM

we have the sick at our house too. i would rather be sick than have to watch the kids suffer (plus sick parents still don't get naps). hope everyone recovers soon.

Posted by: kimblahg at September 26, 2006 09:50 PM

Your fever jumped ship and landed here in AZ. I just got a call that my oldest has a fever.

They're not quite as cuddly at 9 years old though. Just lots of snot. What I wouldn't give for one of snot filled cuddles.

Posted by: Nila at September 27, 2006 03:37 AM

For once I wish I was sick so I could stay home too. I am glad you are better, but sorry that the terrorist germs attacked Mia. She'll get stronger from it though. But it's never fun seeing a sick child, especially b/c they like to cry and scream and sometimes you just don't know what they want! Good luck and feel better :)

Posted by: Michelle at September 27, 2006 08:29 AM

Awww, poor Mia! We both have fever baby posts today.

Geat post Chris, very sweet. Hugs to Mia, I hope she feels better soon.

Posted by: Nadine at September 27, 2006 08:32 AM

Aww, Chris, that is so sweet. Those cuddly moments are the best. Joey is such a cuddler (even when she's not sick and especially before bed time -- to keep me from putting her in her crib...cheaty little thing...!)
