Health, Sleep and Caffeinated Beer

As you might recall, when we last spoke of non-schadenfreude things, Mia was sick and Beth and I were bleary-eyed and grumpy as a result of an evil absence of anything resembling sleep. I'm happy to report that things have improved.

...more on flickr, as always...

Wednesday night, we managed two hours of sleep. Thursday night yielded three, Friday four and Saturday was generous, delivering around five. And on Sunday morning, the clouds (both literal and metaphorical) parted and health rained down on all the land. And the people (us) rejoiced. And it was good. Yes, on Sunday morning, Mia woke up smiling, rarely screamed and played most of the day. I can't begin to share the sense of the relief. Of course, last night we were subjected to more screaming which tempered said sense but it's still a heck of a lot better than it has been.

Mia made it 15 months without getting sick. I have no right to complain. It wasn't pleasant but we made it through and it was, if nothing else, educational. I'd forgotten what those first few months were like with a screaming child up throughout the night. It's frustrating and makes you feel genuinely helpless. And it's draining. So very draining. Now, I'm sure there will be more - I'm not delusional - but we've made it though the first, so we can make it through anything. Let's just not test that theory for a little while, okay?

In other news, while a coworker runs off and gets married, I'm temporarily taking over her job. She's busy. I'm afraid. If you don't hear from me, send help. And beer. Definitely beer. Or coffee. Hey, they should totally make caffeinated beer.

So, how was your weekend? Anything good happen? Come on, share with the class.

I went to a wedding, so that was fun. But I am also among the sleep deprived, due to a simple and eternal battle with insomnia. 4 hours last night. Woo! Hehe. Glad you and the lil one are feeling better.

I worked :( But I'm glad Mia's feeling better!

Posted by: Contrary at October 2, 2006 07:49 AM

apparently, drinking Red Bull and Vodka gives one quite the kick. maybe you should try it.

Posted by: s@bd at October 2, 2006 07:53 AM

Nothing exciting here. Glad Mia is finally feeling better!

Posted by: at October 2, 2006 07:55 AM

Wow, for a minute I thought that by blog-surfing I somehow crested the space/time continuum because it's 7:05am and you wrote this at 7:22am. That's what I get for not blogsurfing for months on end. Sheesh. *lol*

Glad you got some sleep!

Posted by: Iki at October 2, 2006 08:07 AM

You're right--they should make caffienated beer!

Glad Mia's feeling better. And love love love the pic of Beth laughing.

Took the oldest kid (high school tour)down for a college tour and then we all attended a football game. I wrote about it today.

Posted by: wordgirl at October 2, 2006 08:18 AM

Saturday, we went to the local Oktoberfest and had lots of yummy food. I had some organic beer and it was not so good, so I moved on to whatever was full of preservatives.

But yesterday I took a nap and that is ALWAYS the highlight of my weekend.

Posted by: samantha at October 2, 2006 08:21 AM

Just wondering what camera do you use? The quality is fantastic.

Posted by: Katy at October 2, 2006 08:29 AM

So glad to hear she's feeling better. FYI, Flossmoor Station (recently named best small brewpub at the Great American Beer Fest!) made a spectacular stout that had a lot of pounds of dark chocolate added and was fermented on top of espresso beans. Wanna come to Chicago?

Posted by: Leah at October 2, 2006 08:38 AM

Actually I think they should make Alcoholic coffee.

Posted by: Bill at October 2, 2006 08:47 AM

My weekend was delightfully dull. I cooked, baked, and sewed. Damn, I'm starting to sound like June Cleaver. I need to add some rock-wall climbing or something so I sound less boring housewife-ish.

Posted by: Jessie at October 2, 2006 08:54 AM

My dog went into heat, (puppies in December) and I got new glasses and can actually see! Banner weekend! Oh yeah, and I went to a Greek Festival and ate myself silly!

Ah, the infamous ear infection. Gets everyone at some point in their lives. Me? It got me six months ago for the first time ever, and MAN, did it suck. I was in agony; my head and throat both throbbed with unrelenting pain for a week before my balance went to Hell as well, and eventually I admitted defeat and visited the Doctor...Who took one look in my throat and ears (which felt funny but didn't hurt) and said "wow. Yeah, you've got a really bad ear infection. That must suck. Here; have some drugs..."

Well, ok, she didn't say that. But she did give me drugs (antibiotivs) and I DID have an ear infection, apparently.

I feel for poor Mia. I feel for you guys, too, obviously, but hey; you know, she was the one with the horrible infection.

Glad she's feeling better.

Oh, and this has sod all to do with it, but;

"Guy 2: I'm sure it's nothing.
Me: Great. I feel comforted"

That is exactly what *I* would say in those circumstances. Oh, someone used my card number to visit a porn site, you have no idea how, it's in MY name, but it's probably nothing. Well sure, now I feel a whole lot better; glad I called...

This weekend was my turn to be sick so I did as little as possible. Today I'm putting 3 girls on 2 buses and going back to bed.

Alice (above) just emailed me and said she could spot my writing on another blog we have in common from the first two sentences. I realize I recognize her on sight too.

Im so glad Mia is better! Face recovering from his own ear infection and viral lung and me from viral lung - lots of crying still this weekend and not all from him!
But his dad was part of a film crew for the Chopper expo (now with strippers) and got to film nothing but bikes and strippers all weekend so at least one of us had fun!

Posted by: That Girl at October 2, 2006 09:25 AM

I often long for beer with caffeine. Or wine with caffeine. Etc.

Not that I have spent a ridiculous amount of time thinking about that.

Mmmm. Caffeine beer.

I had to work Saturday. Saturday night I cleaned the house and Sunday I did a photoshoot of a pregnant friend, which was really fun. I also took some photos of her dog, as her husband wants me to do a painting of it. A dog portrait! Also, grocery shopping. This morning I am grumpy about going back to work.

So glad Mia's feeling better!

Posted by: kara marie at October 2, 2006 09:25 AM

I recommend Rogue Chocolate Stout, if you're able to get it over there on the East Coast. Gotta be some caffeine from the chocolate, right? Or there's always Irish Coffee.

My weekend? Uh... I knitted, mostly. I also took a very cranky Queen B to a friend's birthday party yesterday, and she actually (mostly) behaved like a little angel, so that was nice.

Posted by: Kate the Shrew at October 2, 2006 10:12 AM

I kept a friend's child the entire weekend! Two under Two! And.... now.... I want another baby (not that I expect YOU to do anything about that... just sharing! :-) )! :-)

Posted by: Steph at October 2, 2006 11:03 AM

drew carey totally made caffeinated beer...

Posted by: kimblahg at October 2, 2006 11:09 AM

Glad the clouds parted... When you find the caffeinated beer, let me know, 0k?

Once again, great shots.

Good luck with the filling in for the runaway bride.

Posted by: Karen at October 2, 2006 11:17 AM

Wait. There IS caffeinated beer. I have seen it at the liquor store. But I can't remember the name. :-D

Posted by: Alison at October 2, 2006 11:38 AM

In Canada, they do make caffeinated beer: http://cnrp.ccnmatthews.com/client/molson/release.jsp?actionFor=578665&releaseSeq=8&category=4&year=2005&logo=http://www.ccnmatthews.com/logos/20060203-mol_200.jpg

(however, other than this press release, there is no other mention of the beer on the molson website. I think the health regulators in canada shut this one down, but I'm not sure....)

Posted by: suze at October 2, 2006 11:41 AM

Google is thy friend caffeinated beer.

I had some once at a beer festival. Two words: Disgusting. I prefer vodka/redbulls. The drink that keeps on giving.

My 9yr old hit his very first in the park home run - all the way to the fence but not over it. He smiled all the way around the bases! My 4yr old re-arranged his own room! Toys everywhere! Then got his guitar stuck and told me he was just practicing! Very fun busy weekend. Glad the Cactus Family is getting some well deserved rest!!

Posted by: Steff at October 2, 2006 01:19 PM

I'm so glad everyone's doing better! I just love that flower in your last post. My pictures NEVER turn out that good!

Oh, and there was actually an episode on the Drew Carey show several years ago (sorry, white trash roots are showing!!) where they were manufacturing beer, and they invented one that was a mix of coffee and beer. Can't remember what it was called, but I always thought it was a fantastic idea!

This weekend? hmmmmm well Friday was my 5 year wedding anniversary. Taht poor poor man! LOL and we got a sitter for the little men, and went to dinner and got snockered, and then went home, had great drunk sex and passed out! LOL Thats about it in a nutshell! LOL oh and for my best gift? My husband took the 3 year old to see my husbands brother yesterday afternoon, theve been gone since yesterday! LOL

Posted by: CJ at October 2, 2006 01:31 PM

Took the four year old to a New Englandy Apple Festival - with freshly popped kettle corn and kids games like throw-the-bean-bag-through-the-cut-out and pet the four horned goat. T'was a lovely day.

So glad you all are feeling better and that you made it through!

Posted by: Sharri at October 2, 2006 01:55 PM

Oh my dear man, they do make "malt" energy drinks. Same ingredients as "red bull" or "bookoo". They taste like *&#!. The only one I liked that tasted good was Ricochet, and it was popular enough that local "huge" grocery chain Albertson's stopped carrying it. Figures, find something you like and they discontinue it.

Posted by: Lisa at October 2, 2006 02:35 PM

Oh man, I can't even imagine how hard it must be to have a sick baby. You (last) week sounds so miserable. I mean, I have nothing to say except "sorry. And here's to this week being better!"

I'm glad that Mia is feeling better. I hope she's back to 100% soon!!

Posted by: Isabel at October 2, 2006 03:16 PM

I'm so glad Mia is feeling better. We did a little of everything...a little swimming, a little shopping, a little laundry.

I'm not sure I would drink caffeniated beer, but it's really just because beer makes me sleep and I'm all for sleep most of the time.

Posted by: Melissa at October 2, 2006 03:42 PM

Pssst. As the chick who works at a beer distributor, lemme tell you they DO make caffeinated beer. It's called B to the E. I made Hoop stop drinking it. Having energetic drunk people stumbling about and talking your ear off about nonsense? Yeah... NO.

Posted by: Tink at October 2, 2006 04:44 PM

We're re-landscaping our home, so I was on my knees in dirt, butt up in the air,...I know...it sounds much more fun that what I had. (That is one occupation--landscaping--I could never do professionally. I'm dead, I think. Muscles hurt.)

"Hey! Someone stuck their beer in my coffee!"

"Somebody put their coffee in my beer!"

Have I heard that somewhere before?

Posted by: kristen at October 2, 2006 05:08 PM

I bought a house. And now have 2 mortgages. Talk about sleeplessness. Or maybe it is just stress-induced insomnia.

When/if you find the caffinated beer--please send some. Quick!

Posted by: Bethany at October 2, 2006 05:11 PM

this weekend was relatively tame compared to last [which involved someone vomiting on me, roast beef dinner, a grossly burnt mouth AND an underpants dance party in my room]. no, this weekend was a movie date with my room mate, curry, and sauce-that-was-supposed-to-be-spaghetti-but-turned-into-we-don't-know-what.

it was still quite tasty.

sleep is everybody's friend. i'm glad it's hanging around your house again.

Posted by: meg at October 2, 2006 05:23 PM

I'm glad all is well again with the Cactus, the Fish and the Bean. My weekend? Why thanks for asking. It was quite noneventful but the best thing was that Ohio State is now 5-0...they RAWK! Other than that it was a lot of catching up with the recorded shows. Stay well and sleep long.

Posted by: Kate at October 2, 2006 05:42 PM

we took our son to the last working farm in Queens, NY. went on a hayride, fed goats, picked pumpkins, ate apple pie and watched dozens of baby chicks and bunnies run about. it was very cute.

Is Guiness ok?

Posted by: cassie-b at October 2, 2006 07:38 PM

Mia is so unbelievably gorgeous...Love the eyes and the cheeks...
I had the international festival on saturday, followed by a quick BBQ at a colleague's place and then a night of Indian dancing whole night. Sunday was the day to recuperate. :)

My weekend consisted of painting and more painting. A group of us went to an Oktoberfest on Saturday night - polka, baby!

The second largest brewer in town, Schlafly, makes a Coffee Stout beer that is seasonal. It will be available for sale on October 20. St. Louis is beautiful in the fall!

Posted by: Beth in StL at October 2, 2006 08:20 PM

The baby cutness is amazing, and I love the picture with Beth laughing. Love it.

This weekend we went to James' high school reunion which was pretty uneventful. However, his best friend showed up with THEIR NEW BABY so I got to play with him (sorry, I got excited about the baby part). The baby proved to be far more entertaining than the event.

Helped the parents move into their new castle, er, house this weekend. Actually, J helped and I chased Button around. And got lost. Several times. There was a time I thought we'd have to call in the search and rescue team. Should have brought bread crumbs.
Was also totally befuddled at how two people could walk in a closet the size of my house and declare, "Oh, there's just not enough room." I hope to understand this one day ;-)

Posted by: SMIT at October 2, 2006 09:00 PM

Me? I spent 2 days cleaning and hauling stuff out of the attic just to look about the house last night and see that it was (way) messier than it was before I started "cleaning" on Saturday morning.

I should have gone with my first instinct and headed up to The Mall to the art museum. Duh.

I'm so glad you're all feeling better. As for me, I almost lost my mind this weekend over Quinn's terrorist activities. It's detailed in my last post. SIGH.

Posted by: Kristen at October 2, 2006 09:54 PM

heh! Caffeinated beer. That's soooo clever. you should get that patented. you'd definitely get rich from it! hmmm....

Adorable pics.

Nothing exciting to report this weekend: fasted for Yom Kippur. Went to synagogue. The monkey was very loud in synagoge....Fasting was HARD.

Glad you're all feeling better! The breastfeeding wards off sickness. The monkey didn't get sick really till after I finished breastfeeding....So, I'm thankful for that, too. :)

Posted by: haley-o at October 2, 2006 11:17 PM

I'm glad that you are feeling better as well. What kinda beer should I send? ;)

Posted by: Bayou at October 2, 2006 11:21 PM

i didn't know you were a beer drinker.

but caffeinated beer? that's a pretty genius idea. i swear chris, someday we have to act on one of these genius ideas we keep having. i mean, this one is yours, but i gotta few of my own.

Posted by: jodi at October 2, 2006 11:37 PM

Work, work, and more work. Not much of a weekend I suppose. My husband was thrilled that I worked because that meant I would be sleeping all day while he watched football and drank lots of beer. His version of heaven.

So glad you're all feeling better. You do good stuff with your photos. I like.

Posted by: Nila at October 3, 2006 01:28 AM

Hey, you don't drink!
O'douls on the way.

Posted by: melati at October 4, 2006 12:45 PM

I thought you didn't drink? Coca Cola makes a coke drink mixed with coffee -- that should really perk you up. Or make you vomit. gross
I had a great weekend. My daughter played with Casey's daughter (of All I'm Saying).
It was real cute!
