Cactus, Rude Cactus...License To Recap The Weekend

Are you guys sick of my uber-predictable Monday morning weekend recaps? Because that's the kind of action I'm about to break out on your asses right now. If you don't mind.

Last week was a tough one and, while this one promises to be a bit quieter, well, that promise is quite frequently broken. Luckily, Friday night and Sunday were prime vegetation days. And I needed vegetation. Not a nice green zucchini or a head of iceberg lettuce. I'm talking time without the need to think. On Saturday night, Beth and I went out. My parents pulled their first solo babysitting gig freeing us to catch dinner and a movie out. Dinner? Hickory smoked salmon over mashed potatoes. The movie? Bond, James Bond. Both were excellent.

A side note about Bond: I'm a James Bond fan. Staring in 1985 with A View To A Kill, I've seen every Bond flick in the theater. I've seen each movie countless times and suffered while the franchise substituted gadgets and double entendre for decent stories. Finally, they've made a movie Ian Fleming could be proud of. This Bond - with Daniel Craig - kicks ass. It's serious, fun, packed with action yet it feels Sean Connery old-school. Best Bond movie since Connery left, hands down.

When we arrived home, we found my parents awake, alive and in possession of all their hair. Mia was in bed. All was well. Of course my parents swore up and down that Mia had said football while we were gone (my dad had been watching a game). I laughed but was proven horribly wrong when, on Sunday morning, Mia uttered the word loud and clear.

So, all-in-all, it was a fantastic weekend that I wished had never ended. But it obviously did, since sitting at my desk downing a cup of coffee at 6:30 in the morning in the hope of recovering some control over my limbs, numbed due to the arctic windchill wouldn't be something I'd naturally decide to do if I'd had a choice in the matter.

On Friday night, I took a picture that I very much liked. Lots of things came together - I clicked the remote on the camera and jumped whilst Mia had a look of awe (fear?) on her face - all at the right second. But of course, it wasn't just luck. It was persistence. I give you the original and the outtakes.

So, what's up with you guys?

Update: It was brought to my attention that I failed to mention the pre-birthday pancakes Beth made for me for breakfast on Saturday. Blueberry pancakes. This was a terrible oversight. The sheer tastiness of said pancakes - their fluffy, syrupy, blueberry goodness - obviously still clouds my sense of judgment hence the startling omission.

When does she get her little flashlight to wave in the air while Daddy rocks out?

Posted by: Contrary at December 4, 2006 07:40 AM

Two quick notes:
1. Monday morning is all about the weekend wrap-up on parent blogs... go ahead and look around.
2. While Mia can say football, wait until she pulls herself up on the couch next to you during a 'Skins game and tosses her arms up and yells "Yay fooball" and looks up at you and smiles. That's even more fun!

Posted by: Jeff at December 4, 2006 07:42 AM

I realize that this probably one of the more ignorant questions that I've asked, but you said that for dinner you had, "Hickory smoked salmon over mashed potatoes".

You are a vegetarian, yes? But you eat salmon? That's meat - doesn't it count? Or do you eat fish? I am very confused about the salmon sentence as I thought you were a non-meat eater, but since I'm not a vegetarian and haven't ever known one, hopefully you'll understand this question is asked out of confusion and curiosity.

Posted by: Emily at December 4, 2006 07:44 AM

Personally, I enjoy the weekend updates. Only you Rude would fess up AND show all the out takes.

Very cool!

Posted by: Wicked H at December 4, 2006 07:44 AM

Rock star!

Posted by: E :) at December 4, 2006 07:45 AM

amazing pic!!! I wonder if she is perhaps thinking "how odd... how very, very odd...."

Posted by: cmhl at December 4, 2006 07:50 AM

The pic you posted is awesome, as I said before, but the outtakes are great, too!

You ate salmon? Aren't you a vegetarian?

Glad you had a nice weekend.

Posted by: Alissa at December 4, 2006 08:05 AM

Happy Birthday. Sounds like a good weekend and the pictures are very cool.

Posted by: William at December 4, 2006 08:14 AM

Well fine, that's the last time I make you Fabulous Pre-Birthday Pancakes. Don't even get a mention. Humph.

Posted by: Mrs. Cactus at December 4, 2006 08:24 AM

Great pictures! I think the look is more of a "WTF is daddy doing" look, but it's still great.

My weekend was full of touring houses and playing board games, along with a lot of wine and my first ever mojito. It was all great. (Which seems to be the word of the day for me.)

Posted by: Jessie at December 4, 2006 08:38 AM

#1: Salmon is delicious. Good choice, especially with mashed potatoes. YUM!!
#2: Those pictures kick ass. I especially like the bottom row, left side pic. And Mia is especially cute as well ^_^
#3: I'm glad the James Bond movie was good. I was considering seeing it, but I know in my heart there is no better James Bond that Sean Connery. From what you've said, Daniel Craig has proved himself worthy. I'm in!

Posted by: Michelle at December 4, 2006 08:45 AM

football. yes. a girl after my own heart. i suppose it's too much to hope for that she be a cowboys fan, huh? yeah. i thought so.

Posted by: pea at December 4, 2006 08:51 AM

Two major events here.
1. Dealing with the biggest ice storm in 5 years. As a result no power with temps in the 20s.

2. Christmas @ the in-laws, oh what fun. Check blog for pics and other fun.

Posted by: Josh at December 4, 2006 09:00 AM

I also loved Casino Royale. So glad you enjoyed it!

Posted by: Heather at December 4, 2006 09:17 AM

That (those really) is a great picture. Like you need me to tell you that! Do you frame and hang the really good ones like this? If you are anything like me, I always have intentions of doing that, but then the pictures just stay on my computer. Oh well.

Posted by: alfredsmom at December 4, 2006 09:19 AM

Great photos!! You've got almost Elvisesque rock star hair. Yes! Also, I thought Casino Royale rocked and I gave it a great review on my blog on opening day.

Posted by: Dolly at December 4, 2006 09:26 AM

Awesome pic!

My boyfriend and I spent the weekend fixing computers down on the Cape. It was a bit of a busman's holiday. So worth it though, we're going to get a free week this summer in one of their vacation rentals in exchange for our efforts.

Posted by: Hope at December 4, 2006 09:26 AM

Heh. Jayla said "football" this weekend too.

Posted by: Tomika at December 4, 2006 09:44 AM

awesome, awesome pic.

Posted by: suze at December 4, 2006 09:49 AM

football is a very important word in a toddler's vocabulary. we've trained Isabella to say it too :)

Posted by: ali at December 4, 2006 09:54 AM

Bought a new sofa. Went Christmas shopping. Put up decorations around the house. Realized how totally BEHIND I am in gift acquisition for others. And...Christmas cards.

Posted by: wordgirl at December 4, 2006 10:22 AM

I think she's thinkin' "whoa dad! You're headed for a hip replacement!"

Happy Birthday!

Posted by: Amber at December 4, 2006 10:41 AM

i never wrap up the weekend.

i just post whatever the hell i feel like posting on monday.

(and, yeah, i didn't get enough sleep this weekend.)

Posted by: s@bd at December 4, 2006 10:43 AM

awesome pics! Yummy pancakes! pre-birthday celebration?! It doesn't get any better than that!

Posted by: kristen at December 4, 2006 10:52 AM

Blueberry pancakes rule. That's all.

Posted by: whit at December 4, 2006 11:18 AM

Awesome weekend! The new James Bond truly rocked! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Great pics. (FWIW, my weekend was awesome, too!)

Am I the only one trying to figure out when your birthday is? Or was it yesterday? Please enlighten me!

Posted by: anita at December 4, 2006 11:46 AM

I am a much bigger fan of the bond books (especially Fleming's - sucks that they are on hiatus. Bit of trivia - Ian Fleming also wrote Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) than the movies, but this one intrigues me.

And speaking of guitars - while cleaning out the attic this weekend, I found my folder of guitar tabs I've been looking for for years. Sweet!

Posted by: Kaz at December 4, 2006 12:10 PM

That is a fabulous picture. The outtakes are great, too. An excellent way to spend some weekend time, to be sure!

Posted by: Vaguely Urban at December 4, 2006 01:16 PM

So, Thursday, I had a baby and all.

Phew - glad it's over.

Posted by: Jen, South Florida at December 4, 2006 01:19 PM

Busy-busy here. Temporarily lost power and nearly got my car stuck due to the major ice storm here in StL, but the power is back and the car is free. Stayed home all day Saturday due to the weather and took a well deserved break. Back to it on Sunday with a brunch, helping a friend assemble a table, and baking 6+ dozen cookies. With all of the holiday stuff I'm doing this week I'll keep pretty busy.

Looks like you had a bunch of fun with those pictures!

Posted by: Beth in StL at December 4, 2006 01:38 PM

Love those pictures.
There might have been 60 or so people crammed into my apartment on Friday night. It was a fabulous party. And a good weekend over all.

Posted by: Hannah at December 4, 2006 01:40 PM

i enjoyed the bond movie too. however, i'm a bit hung up on the BLONDness. Still. Good. and salmon over mashed potatoes? Yum. Sweetwater maybe?

Posted by: raine at December 4, 2006 02:24 PM

Ah, football. The child is showing sparks of genius. It's unfortunate she'll have to cheer for the Skins. Did I say that out loud? That being said, it could be worse... it could be the Texans.

Posted by: Johnny "Tailgator" Smoke at December 4, 2006 02:27 PM

Hilarious. Also, go Mia with saying football! That's awesome.

I should recap my utterly dull weekend.

Posted by: Sparkle Pants at December 4, 2006 03:02 PM

I really liked Casino Royale too. Daniel Craig is an excellent James Bond. Definitely the best Bond since Sean Connery.

My weekend was also fantastic, although it did not include blueberry pancakes. It did leave me in a good mood that has even lasted all day today.

Posted by: bad penguin at December 4, 2006 03:13 PM

haha I love the photos! Definitely got a great one there though! Awesome!

My weekend? I wrote a small book on my blog, though it starts with a newspaper article.

I want pre-birthday pancakes. Blueberry pancakes. My birthday's in January. Where do I make my reservations?

Posted by: Debra at December 4, 2006 05:19 PM

Outtake number 4 sort of looks like you are practicing some sort of ballet move. No wonder Mia's looking at you like that.

Posted by: angela at December 4, 2006 07:34 PM

Forgetting to mention awesomely tasty pancakes is a serious offense. I'm glad you've made the appropriate corrections.

Posted by: Sphincter at December 4, 2006 07:48 PM

I thought this Bond movie was excellent as well. You seem to have had a great weekend. And poor Mia is too stunned to move.

Posted by: Dee at December 4, 2006 08:09 PM

Excellent save on the pannycake mention!

I'm a huge Bond fan as well, and was rooting for Clive Owen to take over once they canned Pierce Brosnan. Daniel Craig would have never even crossed my mind. His face looks like a bulldog. Nice bod though. But, he's getting super reviews. So I'm hoping to catch the flick in the theatre with my son when he gets home for Christmas break. We didn't have time over Thanksgiving. Glad to hear you enjoyed it. Sounds like it's worth the wait!

Posted by: coolchick at December 4, 2006 10:36 PM

Love the pics. LOVE it! Love the weekend recaps, too.
Happy Birthday (again)!
Josh has been wanting to see the new Bond movie. We saw Stranger than Fiction because it was my turn to pick the flick.... But, we'll definitely check out the new Bond movie.

Posted by: Haley-O at December 5, 2006 12:10 AM

Happy Belated. Hope it was swell!!! Kudos on the mention of the pancakes...nice save! ;-)

Oh and Mia? Saying FOOTBALL??? That makes my week. That's a good girl, we have to practice...BUCK-EYES! Yeah, she'll have that down by the BCS Championship...right??? Ok well maybe you can teach her to say HI after you say OH! And then follow with another OH. Let's practice:

You: OH
Mia: HI
You: OH

Great! Heehee

Posted by: Kate at December 5, 2006 02:21 AM

It's tuesday, a little fish told us last week that today is your birthday....

Happy Birthday Chris "Rude" Cactus! I sent you an Ann Coulter book, hope you like it ;) hehehehehehehe Seriously, have a great one!

Posted by: Nanette at December 5, 2006 06:45 AM

Hickory smoked salmon? I thought you guys were vegetarians. Is this an occasional indulgence? :)

Posted by: Zandria at December 5, 2006 09:32 AM

Awesome pics! I went to Dallas, overloaded on family togetherness, and discovered IKEA... all in all pretty good weekend.

Posted by: Kelly at December 5, 2006 10:27 AM

Sounds like a great weekend. I love the pictures! I could use some vegetation time, myself.

Mmmmm... blueberry pancakes.

Posted by: Kate the Shrew at December 5, 2006 10:34 AM

I wonder how many takes Tom Waits needed:

Posted by: Karen at December 5, 2006 12:19 PM

Yummy....I want blueberry pancakes right now. We had french toast on Sunday, but blueberry pancakes might be on the menu this weekend.

You eat salmon? Do you eat sushi?

Posted by: Melissa at December 5, 2006 03:53 PM
